MMAWeekly.com
Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes hasn’t competed for more than a year, and it appears that will be the last time he steps foot in the Octagon.
Already a UFC Hall of Fame inductee, Hughes has been out of action since dropping back-to-back bouts to B.J. Penn and Josh Koscheck between 2010 and 2011, but now he seems ready to move on with life after fighting.
In a recent interview with the Iowa Daily Gate, Hughes said that while he’s never officially announced his retirement from MMA, for all intents and purposes he’s already hung up the gloves.
“I’ve not announced my retirement, but right now it looks like I’m fully retired,” Hughes said in the interview. “The UFC still treats me well, so I can be retired. It’s just funny, when God puts you on a road, you don’t know where you are going. I have all the faith that he put me there, and I have to thank him from that.”
Hughes went on to say that he rarely trains any more outside of an occasional training session with Robbie Lawler or B.J. Penn, and spends most of his time working on his family farm.
Hughes also has a hunting show that he will continue to work on that airs on the Outdoor Channel.
If Hughes’ career truly is at an end, he will retire as a two-time UFC welterweight champion with 18 wins inside the Octagon.

Would have been nice to see a final retirement fight.

I'm actually glad to hear that the UFC is still treating him well after he's retired. He deserves it, the guy gave all he had to Zuffa for years and years. If he truly is retired, I'd just like to thank him for everything. What an outstanding career.

I liked watching him fight. Sure, he was a wrestler, loved wresting, and used it well, but unlike a lot of strong wrestlers he used it to set up finishes (something like 35 finishes vs. 10 decisions). I could be wrong but I think in all but one or two of his title wins and defenses (and there were alot), he finished the guy.

If you look at my location this will suprise you but HUghes asides from being a smug individual (i kept it civil lol) hes one of the Greatest Cage fighters of all Time.. And YES he finished a ton of guys...
I hope he fights one more time vs Serra in NY (if it gets sanctioned soon) but either way hes a well deserved Hall of Famer based off his fight performances...

I enjoyed Hughes' fighting style and the way he performed inside the cage, obviously a UFC/MMA legend.
Outside the cage, well, that's another story.

Ladies and gentleman, the greatest Welterweight in history, Matt Hughes.
Until GSP either retires or gets a few more finishes it will stay that way IMO.
Thank you Matt for all you've done!

Great fighter(in his day) and I winced when Alves splattered him.. but if I knew of his bloodthirsty disregard for all things living back then I would have cheered.
Pity he doesn't have a swansong against Hardy, decent scrap at this point and Dan would most likely find that (shot)chin at some point.. and whisper in his sleeping ear, that one's for the Zebra

Hughes has already lost that 'title' to GSP by way of being finished by him twice.

Took me reading the thread title 4 times to realize it said retired and not retarded. Hughes is a legend. Wish he woukd have had 1 more solid performance before hanging them up though.

Sad to see him go, truly a legend of the sport, but when you know it's time you need to hang em up. It's good to hear he's enjoying retirement.
as much as I liked seeing him fight, after watching his TUF seasons I personally thought he was a bit of a d--- too
first opponent I could think of for a final fight would be Serra (as it would be his final fight too, and I thought he won the first time round)

How could someone not like Hughes' style of fighting?
he went in there to punish people......and he normally did

Actually, the Newton slam is the one finish that made me cringe.
Not because of the slam itself, but because it wasn't a slam. Hughes was out and fell, knocking Carlos out when they hit the ground. I still don't think of it as a win....
