UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes hasn’t had much to prove lately. With 45 wins, the former welterweight champion solidified himself quite a while ago as one of the greatest welterweight fighters in UFC history.
But after a 21-second knockout loss to B.J. Penn this past November, speculation swirled as to the future of the 37-year old.
According to ESPN, Hughes isn’t willing to officially throw in the towel just yet.
“I don’t know if I’ll sign another contract with the UFC. I would have to talk to my wife. I’d have to talk to Dana,” Hughes said on Thursday while he helped teammate Robbie Lawler prepare for a Strikeforce bout against Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at Strikeforce: Diaz vs Cyborg.
“I wouldn’t call it a retirement. It wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for me to fight two or three times. I have said I’m going to fight one more time for the last three fights. I meant it. I really have.”
Hughes first won the UFC welterweight title against Carlos Newton at UFC 38 in 2002. He would go on to defend the belt successfully five straight times before running into Penn at UFC 46. Penn handed Hughes only his fourth career loss at that point to win the title.
Hughes would regain the title against current welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre, in 2004 before dropping it to the same fighter two years later.
Hughes was on a three fight win streak before his UFC 123 loss to Penn.
