How much does personality count when you find yourself cheering for a favorite fighter?
Is your opinion of a fighter based solely on his abilities inside the cage, or is there more to it than that?
I'm not asking if you like a fighter just because he's a nice guy, but do you find yourself disliking a good fighter just because of his demeanor/personality outside the cage?

I think it makes a huge difference for who fans cheer for or who fans hate.
Just look at guys like Bisping, Tito, Brock and Nick Diaz.... they are hated by many but then they are loved by many for the exact same reasons.
Guys with no personality generally are harder to market and for fans to have a rapport with. Even fighters who can't speak english can have the same problem.
Overall I think fans like to have a bunch of fighters they love and a bunch they hate. Anything in between is quickly forgotten.

2 of my favourite fighters have the same personality. Hominick and Lytle. it's just business and they're going to put on good fights. their actions speak volumes. they might not get the big press but they walk away with FOTN honours d*mn near everytime.
I don't much like the fake bad guys like Koscheck, Bisping and so on, i find they get hyped for being the bad a**es when they're really not that bad a**. they play the villain role, but aren't really all that. Not like Rampage used to be.
However, i love Brock Lesnar, not because i like Brock Lesnar, but because he makes so many MMA fans sound like whiney little girls. I gotta admit my favourite lead up to a fight this year was Carwin/Lesnar. and when he had a come from behind win it was great to know that so many people would be crying about it. that's what a villain should be.

Fedors lack of personality is what everyone loves about him. Emotionless before a fight makes you think he is a badass dude. Then when you see him smiling and double fisting ice creams you laugh your *** off.
Ultimately though, talent is the number 1 thing that makes me like fighters. GSP wouldn't have been nearly as popular as he was early in his career though if he wasn't good looking with a french accent, which unfortunately has led me to wanting to punch chicks in the face at live events that feature GSP.

i dont like AS because i think his polite attitude is a bit fake, you cant be really polite outside the cage then talk s--- inside or humiliate fighters by taunting them and refusing to engage. either be nice or dont is how i look at it (not that i expect many to agree)
nick on the other hand, u can tell that his crappy attitude is real.. he seems like a guy that if u dont f--- with him he wont f--- with u. and adding to that, he is always there to fight. he doesnt go to control the clock or lay and pray on top.. he may say dumb s--- sometimes but he believes in it, and i personally like his approach on fighting.
guys like koscheck as well.. the guy knows what hes doing when he plays the heel. but if u look past the hate, youll see hes usually pretty chill. tries hard. loves his crew. and ive never heard a fan say they met him and he was an ***.
cole miller,nick n nate diaz, kos, matt serra, lesnar, are all great examples of guys that sometimes look like assholes, but i think they work so hard they say it because they think they deserve a litle appreciation and to be taken more seriously. lesnar maybe not.

So you've never said something to the affect of "I hope <insert fighter> beats <insert fighter>'s ***, that guy runs his mouth to much."
Most likely inserted with Tito, or Tim Sylvia, or Sonnen, or Mir, or BJ.
The fighters I like aren't because of their personalities, but theres definitely been fighters that i'd like to see lose.

lot of people were all over Pat Barry's nuts because of his personality but over all he is not that great of a fighter, he is a great striker but he has zero ground game

I actually like Tito, Mir and BJ. And Nick and Nate Diaz for that matter.
I was one of the few back in 2008 that thought Sonnen could do well against Silva.
There are fighters that I do want to see wina and lose. But being good guys, or bad guys does not factor in to that. Fact of the matter is, I like fighters who fight. I don't want to f/ck'em. Why should I care about their personalities?

At Bellator 15, Steve Carl defeated Brett Cooper via split decision, which generated passionate booing from the crowd. Most present felt Cooper dominated the second and third rounds. Prior to the match, a video clip showcased Carl's military background and near-miraculous recovery from a leg injury. At WEC 48, Leonard Garcia defeated Chan Sung Jung via split decision. Although an exciting fight, Garcia missed a greater number of strikes when compared to Jung's more technical approach. Garcia is a longtime WEC favorite whereas Jung is a virtual unknown in the U.S. Also at WEC 48, Jose Aldo dominated Urijah Faber for five rounds, yet two judges scored it 49-45, which means that Faber actually won one round. Faber, of course, is a Sacramento crowd favorite. Judging seems skewed toward the more "likable" fighter. In the immortal words of Jules Winnfield, "Personality goes a long way."
