I know it was a dark match that many haven't nor will ever see, but the Jensen/Steinbeiss stoppage was the worst I have ever seen. Jensen had a moderately tight guillotine going and the ref, Gary Ritter (who?), pulls Steinbeiss's arm. Steinbeiss reacts, moves his arm with the thumb up directly in front of the ref. The ref then immediately jumps in and calls the fight. Among the most ridiculous calls I've ever seen in any sport. I know the UFC has little input into the referees used, but these awful calls from local athletic commission refs have got to stop. Anybody else seen this fight?

found it. thats pretty bad.

i could see how the ref might have thought he was passed out, you can tell the ref begins to move in before he really gets that thumb up.....he gets the thumb up, but his arm does fall back down again. i think he could've asked if he was tapping/ready to quit tho.....if he was passed out it wasn't for a long time....he could've waited for a response again and even if he was passed out, he wouldn't of been in danger of brain damage or anything.

They need to fire a ref or two so the other ones open their eyes? What a joke.

UFC has zero control over the refs, they work for the state athletic comission. they can't pick who refs which fights or even which refs they get for the fights. i have no idea how these guys are hired or what training they go through, but it seems that there should/could be less frequent controversial endings to fights.

I agree with you, but at this point its a judgement call. If the ref thinks the fighter is in danger or being severly injured, the fight is stopped. Its the ref's call to make, and where some calls seem controversial, like a flash knockout where the fighter jumps right back up to his feet and complains, watching replays should prove that it wasnt. If the fighter goes limp, even for that couple of seconds, the fight is over. That's why MMA fighters that are older done seem to be so punchy.
Some still are, and i havent watched the video due to being at work, but i'm sure that there was a reason the ref stopped the fight. If its as bad as you guys make it sound, i'm sure the commission can do something about it, and the ref will have to explain himself.

i've seen worse. dudes arm looks like it goes limp and he's not trying to get out of the submission. he was laying completely flat, and to be honest, looks like he's passed out. if he had a hand on his opponents arm trying to push it down to get his head out, or even if he was on his knees when the hold was on, it would be a better argument, but this dude is laying flat and doing nothing with his free hand.

Not Really, Cain was throwing some serious leather at Rothwell and even if Rothwell has a serious chin (or Cain just throws pillow punches :?: ), Cain did land 5 unanswered flush shots, and I'm actually very okay with this stoppage. Ref's gotta draw a line to protect the fighters somewhere. Ref did warn Rothwell in the first that he had to show some sorta defence or even offence to not get stopped.
Oh and the knee on the throat was pretty epic, not super effective but cool nonetheless.

That takes the cake i mean seriously a fighter gives a thumbs up means.... a thumbs up hes fine...
The Cain vs Ben stop was bad but either way Rothwell was on his way to losing(still a bad stop though).

Worst IMO was Kimbo vs James Thompson... how can you stop a fight when both fighters are standing and throwing punches. Yeah he was a little rocked but come on, that was ridiculous.

They could have stopped that fight at any point really, it was just too one-sided.
If you go back and watch, when Rothwell is standing up getting hit, there's a couple of shots where it looks like his eyes roll back, the ref started stepping in instantly after that and that's when Ben tries to finish standing up. I wasn't upset with the stoppage. Controversial would have been if they stop it when Ben gets in just a couple of hits and give him the win when he was losing the whole time.
And yes, like Doogie said, ref had already warned him, he had a second chance to turn that fight around and didn't, what else can the ref do?

"how can you stop a fight when both fighters are standing and throwing punches?"
there's been a lot of standing knockouts. Look at Anthony Johnson vs Tommy Speer, I'm glad they stopped that standing up, it was brutal.
I think Brett Rogers vs Arlovski was stopped standing up too.
Just because you're body is standing vertically does not mean you are not hurt or in serious danger of brain damage. I've seen several standing knockouts that were perfectly acceptable stoppages.
oh, and the Thompson vs Kimbo, yes, that was a bad stoppage, clearly they wanted Kimbo to win so they were waiting for any half decent moment to stop it when Kimbo was winning so he wouldn't get taken down and dominated any more

I think it was more odd that they did not call the fight in the 2nd round when Kimbo was getting elbowed for about a minute showing no defense what-so-ever.

I agree. Ben never looked like he was going to win, but there were a couple of times when it could have been stopped and it would be fine - just not that particular moment.
