Nick Diaz came one step closer to his grumpy transition toward a boxing career today, as a press release was distributed claiming that Jeff Lacy has officially signed to box Diaz this fall. A former IBF super-middleweight champion, Lacy was one of the guys who Gary Shaw dismissed as an irrelevant opponent for Diaz, but when you have a 1-0 record in boxing (as Diaz does), beggars can’t be choosers. In fact, Diaz is just as irrelevant an opponent for Lacy when you think about it, but whatever.
No date or venue has been named yet, although the event will be titled “Breaking History.” (Good. As long as we have the important stuff locked down, everything else should fall into place on its own.) Said promoter Don Chargin in the press release: “This is a very dangerous fight for both men. Not only is this fight dangerous but stylistically it is very intriguing. I expected more resistance from fight fans and media in regards to this match-up but it’s amazing as to the hundreds of calls and e-mails I’ve received from fans on both sides wanting to see this match-up take place. I’ve received more than a few inquiries from some other very high-profile boxers that want to step up and fight Nick. Its been a real whirlwind…
“I’ve been around boxing for quite some time and I’ve seen a lot of great, tough fighters in my six decades within the sport. I believe that if Nick had been one of those kids who had picked up boxing from a youth, he’d undoubtedly be a world-champion today. Sometime within the next 2 weeks I’ll be personally making the trek to Cesar Gracie’s gym to set up a private, closed door sparring session between Nick and a few nameless top-level contenders I have in mind.”

Last month, Jeff Lacy responded quite positively to the news that Diaz wanted to fight him, saying:
“Honestly, I was a little stunned. Nick has accomplished a great deal in mixed martial arts and is certainly one of the best in the sport. But getting in the ring with me for a boxing match is a path he needs to be very wary of taking. I’m willing to put it all on the line anytime, anywhere!…For the right price, I’m more than interested in heading to his turf and put my fist in his mouth and silencing him.”

By the way, there hasn’t been an official statement from Nick Diaz or his camp yet confirming that they’ve signed for the fight, so take this press release with a grain of salt; as of this week, Cesar Gracie seemed to be angling for a fight between Diaz and GSP.
UPDATE: Cesar Gracie tells MMAWeekly, “Yes, unless GSP is offered up as a sacrifice [by the UFC], Nick will fight Lacy.”

Title isn't even right. Diaz didn't sign anything. Lacy signed to fight him. Dana will offer Diaz to fight GSP and there won't be anymore boxing talk.

Craziness... I LOVE IT!
_
BTW, Cesar Gracie has such a way with words, doesn't he?
MMAWeekly -
“Yes,” Gracie answered via text to MMAWeekly.com when asked if Diaz will sign on to face Lacy. “Unless GSP is offered up as a sacrifice, Nick will fight Lacy.”

They could not have picked a better opponent for Diaz, a slow guy who relies on his power and has trouble against guys with fast hands and a decent reach. He could actually stand a chance here. I am interested to see the odds on this one.

Josh Gross via twitter -
Sounds to me like Diaz-Lacy is insurance/posturing. It's real unless UFC somehow makes GSP-Diaz. If they don't, then Diaz is boxing.

Re: Nick Diaz vs. Jeff Lacy Boxing Match Is Signed for the F
Diaz vs. Lacy set:
Camp Lacy says ‘Left Hook’ isn’t losing to a 1-0 fighter
Steve Cofield - ESPN Radio, Yahoo, Cagewriter.com
... Lacy's manager Bernie Bahrmasel said his fighter has signed the deal. ESPN.com's Josh Gross spoke with Diaz's mentor Cesar Gracie, who said the MMA fighter also put pen to paper.
Diaz didn't actually signed a contract to fight Lacy. He's signed a bout agreement with Don Chargin, the promoter, with the understanding that it's going to be Lacy...

Even at this stage in his career, Lacy will wreck Diaz.
Diaz has almost no power with 4oz gloves, now he has to wear 8oz gloves.
The difference in technique is just ridiculous

While I do not agree with what you say Sir, Ill defend to the death your right to say it.
A former boxing World Champ will have no problem dealing with the HORRIBLE boxing technique of Diaz and the power Diaz is bringing to the table is laughable at best compared to Joe Calzaghe and even a washed up Jones Jr. Diaz carrying his hands so low, his chin up and out, is just asking for a broken jaw from somebody like Lacy or at least, a short night. Lacy, rd KO.

I think it might be the wrong idea to look at Diaz's MMA fighting stance and think that it will be his Boxing stance. Something similar? Most likely. Exact? Doubt it.

People always go back to what they know once they get hurt. He may start out with a better stance, but once he feels Lacy's power, he will resort back to his sloppy, comfortable stance. I don't think Diaz has ever felt power like what Lacy will be bringing to the table.

You may be totally right. The thing I see leading to Nicks ultimate demise is his sloppy, overly aggressive technique and against a puncher and former wold champion boxer like Lacy, that spells a very painful night for Diaz, but thats why they fight and don't leave the outcome to us fans.

I can't see Dana letting this happen start throwing money at him so he can beat up gsp instead.

I could see GSP's eye delaying his next fight. Lots of time to put Diaz in a boxing ring.

i agree his pitter patter style won't work that well in pro boxing. his punches wont get through due to the bigger gloves and he will have far bigger and far more dangerous bullets to dodge against lacy.

Re: Nick Diaz vs. Jeff Lacy Boxing Match Is Signed for the F
One way or another, Nick Diaz should be getting a big fight.
Best case scenario:
Diaz-Lacy
happens first
GSP-Silva
at catchweight (no permanent move to MW for GSP)
GSP-Diaz
for the WW Title (both coming off of losses)
... and while we're at it, down the road...
Silva-Bones
for the new P4P king crown (Jose Aldo having dropped after losing Mendes, Bones moving up having beaten Rashad)
Bones-JdS
for Baddest Man on the Planet (JdS having beaten Velasquez to win the belt, and Overeem to unify the belts)
