Not Waiting for Title Shot: Alistair Overeem Wants to Fight the Minute He Gets His License Back
Former Strikeforce and K-1 Grand Prix champion Alistair Overeem is anxious to get back in the UFC Octagon again, the sooner the better.
Overeem is still serving out his nine-month de facto suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission stemming from a test given in April. That test indicated the Dutch fighter had an elevated ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone.
Now residing full time in Florida as part of the Blackzilian camp, Overeem has dedicated himself to training and preparing for his return to the cage once he can apply for a fight license.
It appeared briefly that Overeem might get to face UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos upon his return, but ultimately promotion officials opted to give the next shot to former titleholder Cain Velasquez at UFC 155 in December.
The news may have been somewhat discouraging for Overeem because he has been gunning for dos Santos since entering the UFC, but the bigger picture right now is just getting back to fighting, no matter who the opponent might be.
“First of all, he would have loved to have had the opportunity to fight for the title, but Alistair is a fighter, and as a fighter he will fight whoever they put in front of him,” Overeem’s manager Glenn Robinson of Authentic Sports Management told MMAWeekly Radio recently.
“Reality is, he’s training extraordinarily hard, and whoever gets in front of him is going to meet a completely different Alistair. This guy is just dedicated to rebuilding and rededicating himself.”
Despite being on hiatus until at least December, Overeem isn’t taking to time to enjoy a long vacation or even spend the extra months at home in Holland. No, he’s treating this extended period of time between fights as a long and hard training camp, aimed at making Overeem the best he’s ever been.
“He’s in great shape. He’s in better shape now than when he joined us. He’s strong; his cardio is crazy. He’s training with pro football players, a whole team of pro football players. We ran out of people large enough to fend him off, so we put him with a whole pro football team to do cardio,” Robinson revealed.
“All that’s going to happen is whoever does face him is in a lot of trouble.”
Overeem’s longterm goals are still to take the UFC heavyweight title and add it to his mantle of championships, but he knows he’s not going to face Junior dos Santos upon his return.
The Dutch wrecking machine has already been out too long and when the gates are opened for his return, Overeem wants to face the best heavyweight available, as soon as possible.
“He wants to come back as soon as he can. We have to wait until the Nevada State Athletic Commission can give him the license, and he’s doing everything he can to live by the letter of the law so that there’s no issue with getting that license when the time comes,” Robinson stated.
“He’s going to be ready to fight the second that there’s a fight. He’s not going to need a camp, because he’s never left camp. The day that he’s allowed to be licensed, if they want him to fight the next day, he’ll be ready.”

Of coarse he does.
I wonder how the Mir vs Cromier timeline will work out for his return.

Cormier vs Mir will probably be in the next few months, so a bit of time out could result in a January/February fight against Overeem. It wouldn't surprise me if the UFC told him to get ready for a fight in January and give him his opponent, but announce it after his suspension.

Yeah, just looking halfassed now and all I see are possibly Oct. Nov. ish. Myself, I'm assuming Cromier wins, and apart from injury the one thing that may throw a wrinkle into things is weather Cromier deserves a title shot after that win, (fans may scream for it) as oppossed to a #1 contenders match with Overeem. It'll be interesting how that plays out.

Re: Not Waiting for Title Shot: Alistair Overeem Wants to Fi
I agree a Cormier matchup doesn't make sense for Cormier at the moment. If he comes out of the Mir fight victorious, he will be in line for a title shot. That would leave the UFC with two solid contenders.
In the meantime, AO could fight someone like Kongo. It's a step back from Lesnar, but it would allow AO to stay active and in contention.

It's good to know that AO is dedicated to rededicating himself...

Re: Not Waiting for Title Shot: Alistair Overeem Wants to Fi
Him fighting DC (Assuming DC beats Mir) would be stupid since they'd be eliminating one strong contender. Him vs Browne/Silva winner would be good, or Kongo, or Rothwell, someone to shake out the rust before he gets his shot.

But that's the whole purpose of having a "#1" contenders match. Undisputed, is the name of the game. No need to baby him imo, he's Alistair f---ing Overeem.

Re: Not Waiting for Title Shot: Alistair Overeem Wants to Fi
i wish carwin had been able to get a fight in this fall/early winter as i would like to see him and AO....
Not really sure who will be available around January...if miocic can keep it going with a finish over struve i would say that might be good, test for miocic and return fight for AO

The purpose wouldn't be to "baby" either of them, it would be to preserve an additional compelling title fight. If one eliminates the other, who would the next challenger be? They can always fight each other after the title matches.
A #1 contender match like we just had in the LHW division makes sense when neither of them has quite earned it. There are good arguments that both AO and Cormier already have. Putting them in each other's path makes no sense at this stage.

Re: Not Waiting for Title Shot: Alistair Overeem Wants to Fi
Well if Overeem WANTS to fight it would probably be against Werdum for the #1 contender bout and finalizing the trilogy. Now i know their second fight SUCKED but after seeing Werdums recent 2 fights in the UFC and Overeem now rededicated, i say this fight could be fun for a trilogy.

I only meant that "baby" in regards to Alistair specifically, while responding to what was posted, don't take it out of context.
Sure it does make sense. Cain is the challenger, that isn't due to fight till Dec. Mir/Cromier in Oct/Nov sometime. Then Overeem gets back early 2013, if none other than to keep all the contenders on the same timeline, providing Cromier wins then it makes perfect sense to have them 2 scrap near to when JDS/Cain fight for the strap. You're worried about who's next after Overeem/Cromier fall into place, well time answers that question. If this timeline of scraps works out you don't have to really worry about who's got next till mid f---ing summer.
In that time Werdum will have established himself in/or out of the mix as well, among others. It makes perfect sense. I say screw the lets preserve compelling match-ups, I'm more "pro" move the f---ing division along. It's the Ultimate Fighting Championships, not who's going to be the next big star of the division. FIGHT !!

Re: Not Waiting for Title Shot: Alistair Overeem Wants to Fi
I don't know who Overeem could fight. Maybe the winner of Browne/Big Foot but I don't think Big Foot would deserve Overeem if he won. Maybe Hunt, but he already tapped Hunt. Damn near everyone else is coming off of a loss or is booked.

It's amazing how much muscle mass Da Reem has lost now that he's not on the juice.
