I think it's interesting we talk about freakshow fights like it's ok and fun and great for viewers, but then turn around and talk about fighter safety in other threads like the two aren't related. What will it take to stop fights that just don't make any goddam sense? Sakuraba is fighting at the age of 46 after 5 years on the shelf and people are treating it like a good thing? Is that a novelty fight or an extremely dangerous way to put MMA on the map for "deaths in sports"? Looking back at Shamrock vs. Kimbo it is scary that people were actually into that as much as they were just for the sake of Bellator getting a few extra viewers for one night. Two old men who haven't fought in 5 years....is it just luck that nothing serious happened?

It's only worth it if the UFC does it. Because if the UFC deems it worthwhile, then it is fine.

What difference does it make which organization it is? This is a grueling sport regardless where the fight takes place.

The UFC is the biggest mma organization, so they are able to make a reasonable decision on whether the fighters are ready for it.

I don't agree with that...Dan Henderson is 45, nothing to prove, nothing really left in the tank, and is fighting a guy who already made quick work of him less than 2 years ago. Fight makes no sense. Now that may not be considered a "freakshow" fight because Dan has been a bit more active, but is it worth watching Dan Henderson go in there and potentially fall to the ground and die due to a heart attack? Some guys are just built not to quit. Hendo seems like one of them.

I think it depends on who it is.. James Toney, HW, Randy, Foremen all fought at a higher age.. But we're also cleared to fight.. For me that's the only thing that matters.. Does a Dr give an OK.
I doubt a Dr ( maybe on the reservation) cleared Ken or Kimbo.. And a Dr will more thsn likely not clear Sakuraba to fight.. But he will.

The UFC utilized the vast resources at their disposal to come to the determination that yes, that is fine. So I believe them. They have the means to make the right call, so it is the right call.

If the doctors clear them and they really want to fight, they can fight. Gets murky when there has been substantial damage taken in a career, especially with Ken and Sakuraba. Glad Liddell hasn't tried to come back.
If they really have an itch to compete, I wish they could stick to some sort of competitive grappling. I enjoyed Renzo/Sakuraba.

Bernard Hopkins 50 year old Champion. They want to fight and are medically cleared to do so, more power to them. Their call to make. Not yours

Key word for that is champ..Sakuraba hasn't been at that level for a long time.. Neither has Ken, and Kimbo is a never was... I agree, let them fight if they want to.. But having a real AC over see and clear them is a very important part of the fight game. And I don't consider a reservation AC to be legitimate, it's a way to get a round real oversight and fighter safety.

Lol who the f--- said it was my call? Simply stating we are so concerned about fighter safety at some points and then you get a main event with a 50 year old in it and it seems to be ok because millions tuned in. You think the sport would really benefit from a death of an old guy who tries to push the limits in competing professionally?

I think if both the fighters are able to fully understand the risks of fighting at their age, pass the medicals and want to fight then who I am to tell them that they can't or shouldn't. I'd much rather watch Ken Shamrock vs. Kimbo Slice or Tito Ortiz vs. Stephan Bonnar (Guys who I know their history and am invested in their careers) than 90% of the fight card when the UFC does fight pass events from Asia.
