If the athlectic commissions ever allowed open weight tournaments in the UFC, who would u like to see?
GSP vs Anderson Silva - Rampage vs Couture - Sylvia vs Liddell - Wanderlei SIlva vs Gonzaga?
This is fun to talk about but you have to give us the guidelines. 8 or 16 man? last two fights in the same night? any other rules? I will give you my lineup, just let me know your rules
I doubt it will happen.
TUF is about as close as the UFC's going to come to another tournament, from what I gather.
but wtf good's the Internet,if not for wild speculation?
The Commission would never allow weight mis-matches, but if they did I'd like to see Liddell v Cro-cop, Shogun (healthy) v Spider Silva, and any two of Penn/A.Silva/GSP against each other. I'd also like to see Fedor v Sherk, but thats just cos I cant stand that little cheating douchebag.
Not too likely. I don't think many state athletic commissions would allow fights like these. Too many over matched, or out weighed fights. Would it be a fantastic thing to see. YES. But fantastic is a fantasy...

Strikeforce held a sanctioned one night tourney recently, won by Jorge Santiago. So the only problem is the weights. But if you're talking only 2 divisions apart 9like WW and MW) catch weights can be easily arranged.

plus the HW division is 206 to 265 lbs - that's a rather sizeable range.
Rich Franklin could probably fight an open-weight tourney, but I doubt many other MWs could. They're not as big as Ace (maybe Okami).
i don't doubt that BJ Penn would want to enter - he's a frikken gamer that dude.

PRIDE tournaments:
16 fighters, 3 events
1st event 1 fight (leaves 8)
2nd event 1 fight (leaves 4)
3rd evetn 2 fights (leaves 1)
standard UFC rules - 3 x 5 minute rounds

The UFC would have to do it like this, or just have 8 fighters spread over 3 events so they don't fight twice in one night. Maybe take out elbows to the face to try to limit cuts.
would it make more sense if the "Open Weight' were from 186 to 245 lbs??? that's the same range as the HW division, and could include MW, LHW and the lighter of the HW.
Here's eight that I think would be capable of fighting well at a mid-range catchweight:
GSP, Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Dan Henderson, Penn, Kampmann, Marcus Davis, Wanderlei Silva

I really like your lineup, you can tell you put alot of thought into it. One name really sticks out to me though, not sure he is the calibur of the rest of your lineup.
Marcus Davis doesn't belong there in my opinion. Not at the talent level of the other 7 fighters. If you changed Davis with Matt Hughes or John Fitch, I would back your lineup 100%.
Agreed. I think I picked Davis just as sort of a wild card, because he's starting to look better and better, but Hughes, or preferably, Fitch, makes more sense.
GSP, Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Dan Henderson, Penn, Kampmann, Jon Fitch, Wanderlei Silva
Here's a few other cross-weight matches that I think COULD be interesting:
Machida/Nog
Hughes/Henderson
Edgar/Fitch
Soko/Karo
Tim Sylvia/Forrest Griffin
Huerta/Kos
Guida/Tanner
Tyson Griffin/Marcus Davis
What you could do is have an above 200 pound tourney and over 200 pound tourney
Over 200 Pounds
1. Big Nog
8. Fabricio Werdum
4. Chuck Liddell
5. Tim Sylvia
3. AA (if signed) or Jardine
6. Shogun Rua(if not injured) or Machida
2. Rampage
7. Forrest Griffin
Under 200 Pounds
1. Anderson Silva
8. Yushin Okami
4. Matt Serra
5. Matt Hughes
3. BJ Penn
6. Sean Sherk
2. GSP
7. Marcus Davis
