In a bout sure to cause some commentating confusion, MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from sources close to the event that a fight between Paulo Thiago (11-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and Thiago Alves (16-5 MMA, 9-3 UFC) is currently in the works, and at least one of the fighters has been approached about the contest.
American Top Team representatives declined to comment on the likelihood of the fight, and bout agreements for the contest have yet to be distributed.
Thiago looks to bounce back from his first career defeat, a unanimous-decision loss to Jon Fitch at July's UFC 100. The one-sided affair was Thiago's second UFC contest and followed a surprising TKO of contender Josh Koscheck in February.
Meanwhile, Alves will be looking to bounce back from a UFC 100 loss of his own, dropping a unanimous-decision to UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at the July event. The loss was Alves' first since a June 2006 TKO at the hands of Fitch.
Though not yet officially announced, UFC 107 is set to take place on Dec. 12 at FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn. Headlined by a light heavyweight matchup between former champions Rashad Evans and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, the main card will air live on pay per view.

First Kos , then Fitch and now Alves. The UFC are really giving this guy a hard time. I think he is a good fighter but Alves is better. Big KO for Alves in the 2nd round.

Thiago Alves takes this easy to throw his name back up to number 1 contender status.

How does one win by a guy coming off a huge loss, against a guy coming off a decisive loss, put him at # 1 contender ?

I suppose i'm one of the few people that didn't really think there was a winner out of Fitch and Thiago, they ineffectively grappled and tried for poor submission attempts for 15 minutes. If Fitch is #2, then i thought Thiago did pretty d*mn good. Neither guy really gave or got damage in that fight.
So i'm looking forward to this one.

I think Fitch is overrated due to his win streak and a old win over Alves. Fitch is extremly tough, no doubt, but I don't think he top 5 skils wise, Personally I think Koscheck is the more skilled fighter of the two, unfortuneatly we'll probably never know.

Yeah I know, I was just pointing out that Fitch has been inflated in the rankings.

WTF!!! give the kid a break, give him a couple of mid tier fighter so he can get some cage experience and then another big fight... Thiago Alves will kill him right now...

Perfect fight for Alves!
Paulo Thiago has only lost 1 fight and it was to Fitch, and by a somewhat close decision. If Alves KOs Paulo Thiago or gets a solid decision win, then his status remains high and probably ahead of Fitch, since they're both seemingly interchangble by most rankings at 2 and 3 WW. A big win, would solidify him as 2 and get him a big jump into getting another shot at title.
On a side note, sorry if it pisses anyone off....Am I the only person thinking a GSP/BJ Penn 3 could be very likely is Penn dominates Sanchez like he did Florian and GSP smokes winner of Kampman/Swick???

And Fitch just beat this guy very boringly and it put him back up to #2 spot. If Alves gets a BIG KO than it should put him ahead of Fitch.

Fitch also beat Akihiro Gono after the GSP loss and before the Thiago win, so i think Alves has to do more than win one fight in order to be #1 contender. From what I read of your post it was directly implying that by beating Paulo, Alves' name would be thrown back to #1 contender status.
Also, aside from the GSP loss, FItch had not lost to anyone since 2002. Thiago Alves lost to Spencer Fisher and John Fitch before stringing together some wins and the losing to GSP. Granted it was only 2 losses, but they were from 2005 and after and Fitch only lost once.

i meant if he beat pualo thiago it could throw him into a #1 contender fight, possibly a rematch against fitch since the last time they fought was in 06 and both have improved. Im just sayin if anyone is gonna beat GSP at WW is either fitch or alves because they both went to 5 rounds with him and would know what to do to improve thier chances. If Fitch beats Almeida, and Alves beats Thiago, i would love to see that rematch for #1 contender. If not them for #1 contender, that who else in welterweight?
