Frankie Edgar is likely to get the next shot at UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn, according to Sports Illustrated’s Josh Gross, who reports that the matchup is “very likely” for April.
Yesterday, Penn announced that he would likely fight at UFC 112 on April 10 in Abu Dhabi.
Gray Maynard, who takes on Nate Diaz in the main event of Monday’s UFC Fight Night 20, was also believed to be in contention for the title shot, and things could conceivably change pending the bout.
Edgar (11-1), a four-time national wrestling qualifier at Clarion University, has gone 6-1 in the UFC since debuting with the promotion in early-2007. Despite a loss to Maynard in April 2008, three straight wins over Hermes Franca, former champ Sean Sherk, and, most-recently in December, Matt Veach were apparently enough to earn him a matchup with Penn.
Penn (15-5-1) has won 5 of his past 6 fights, losing only to welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre last January before dominating title defenses over Kenny Florian in August and Diego Sanchez in December.
UFC 112 is also expected to feature middleweight champion Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort and Matt Hughes vs. Renzo Gracie.

Matt Veach to BJ Penn? A bit of a step up in competition, wouldn't you say? There's no way this thing has the drawing power of BJ/Diego, I don't care how much Joe Rogan talks him up. Maynard has a much better claim to the title shot IMO, plus they have the fact that he was on BJ's team on TUF to help sell it. It's shitty that the rematch with Nate Diaz is only 3 months before UFC 112.

This is ridicolous... Maynard deserve the shot alrady and he is fighting Diaz... Griffin should fight Stevenson first

Oh god, dont get your panties in a ruffle fellas, Penn will steam roll Edgar and probably be ready to fight again very soon after, so Maynard won't be on the shelf too long supposing he gets past Diaz first. Hell, they could probably do this fight in June/July.

I am just happy to see BJ Penn fighting this frequently.

Its hard to give BJ interesting matchups anymore especially after how he destroyed Sanchez.Everyone at 155 including Aoki in my opinion is going to look bad against BJ penn

I think he's finally understanding what it is to be a champion.

I'm also happy to see this and I agree that he is finally understanding what it takes to not only be a fighter but a great champion. With him doing strength and conditioning with Mar Marinovich, BJ is unstoppable at lightweight. I don't even see this as being close if BJ keeps up his level of conditioning.

I'm glad to see BJ fighting more often. It seems like he is on a mission to clean out the LW division as fast as possible so he can move up to WW. He is itching to get in the cage as soon as possible and scratch LW contenders off the list.
After he beats Edgar, he'll probably fight Maynard around the middle of summer and win that as well. A Fall fight with a WW contender, then a New Year's shot at the WW title.

I'm pretty sure if Gray smashes Nate and finishes, he will get the next title shot. But if he wins in the same way like he did Clementi, for sure Edgar is next in line. Not that it matters, they each will get their shot....and they both will lose
WAR PENN!
