The key difference is he won. Fitch did not. That said there isn't exactly any WWs out there that you can say are more deserving than these two. No one is coming off a string of wins that warrants a shot at the belt.

BJ is on a 1-0-1 streak actually if you want to be technical about it he is 1-1-1 in his last three WW fights and GSP was on a 5 fight win steak since his last loss. Different circumstances.

Someone asked this question to Penn and Fitch at the press conference. Fitch said he is cool with it and Penn said he thought he would need another win over Fitch before he fought for the belt. I don't know if he completely understood the question.
If this fight would have gone into the fourth, bj wouldnt have survived.
I guarantee bj would have a striking oriented game plan for a 5 rounder against fitch. He isn't physically capable of grappling a large welterweight for 5 rounds

I have to agree he wouldn't have survived a 4th let alone a 5th round.
Why did he and the Marinovich's split up? When they where doing his strength and conditioning he was in the best shape of his career.
No for two reasons. One, they did not win and both of them stated they should get a win before the title (post fight presser). And two, the reason why BJ won round 1 and 2 is because he
surprised
fitch with the takedowns. Now that fitch knows whats coming I think the second fight would look like round 3.
The draw was dissappointing but imo the upside is it leaves more options at ww if GSP does leave. Neither man won but they didnt lose either. Add Alves,and Condit with these two guys and I think you have a decent four way race for the vacated belt. Maybe BJ/Alves and Fitch/Condit then winners for the title?
