‘To me, it’s Mohammed’: Abdul El-Sayed faces Muslim Brotherhood claims in Michigan Senate race

The progressive Democrat holds a narrow lead over Republican Mike Rogers and hopes to become the first Muslim US senator, but resurfaced posts by his half-sister about their mother's past activism have intensified the controversy surrounding his campaign

Three times, Abdul El-Sayed answered "no" when asked in an interview whether he or his family had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. But on Monday, just one day after his appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press," a social media post written by his half-sister 14 years ago began circulating: Their mother, she wrote, had been active in the Islamist movement in Egypt during the 1970s, before immigrating to the United States.

For El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for a U.S. Senate seat in Michigan who hopes to become the first Muslim senator in American history, the revelation is politically explosive just three weeks before the midterm elections. His Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, has already turned the posts into a campaign advertisement in a race that could determine whether Republicans retain control of the Senate or Democrats take it over for the remainder of Donald Trump's presidency.

"I had an amazing conversation with my mom about her activism in the Muslim Brotherhood in the early 1970s, when she was in college," Eman Abdelhadi, now a researcher at the University of Chicago, wrote on Twitter, now X, in 2012, adding the hashtag "#respect."

In another post, she wrote: "My family has long been MB," referring to the Muslim Brotherhood, although she added that she believed the movement had handled politics poorly and destructively. In 2013, she wrote that relatives had been imprisoned because of their membership in the Islamist organization and asked followers to pray for family members who supported it in Egypt.

I remember a time when someone's political career could be ended just because they screamed like an idiot at a pep rally. Now? Our president posts AI videos of himself wrestling a tiger a day after a mentally ill guy gets mauled by a tiger. And no one cares. It is amazing how low the standards for our highest office have sunk. Just total piece of trash as a human being.

Trump is low class as it gets but better than all those snakes in a suit out there

No. I'd rather of gotten Gary Johnson on the 1st go around.

100%

I still don't understand how the "they are going to steal democracy!" side completely ignored democracy after Biden dropped out and awarded Kamala the nomination without any kind of primary.

I'm not saying it was "illegal". It was all very much in the grey and I get the common sense rationale behind why they did it.

It was just crazy that they continued with the, "GOP will stop at nothing to end Democracy, we're different!" tagline after pulling what they did.

(none of that is an endorsement for Trump or any of the messes he's created since taking office this go-round)

I voted for Gary Jonson and Jo Jorgenson. Libertarians will never amount to much unfortunately and both were more inadequate to the job than those that won.

But honestly, I would rather go back to 2016 and have Bernie win than what happened with Clinton, and Bernie would have beaten Trump, I am sure of that. At least with Bernie, his crazy socialist rants would have turned everyone off before we ever got Biden's obvious cognitive flaws that allowed the entire gender diversity arguments that are still so rampant today (even though pretty much meaningless to a statistically insignificant population of trans people). And with a Republican Congress at the time, Bernie would have gotten nothing done, just like Carter, and we might have an actual conservative party again.

But here we are with the shit sandwich of Trump's deranged ego trying to ease Russian sanctions to get 9 days worth of diesel which will cost him a ton against actual Republicans (there are a few left and most do not want his campaign help or turned their policies away from his like the guy in Michigan who is going to lose to Dr. Abdul el Sayed) when he loses both houses in November.

@Trig considering Trump lied about literally ever single campaign promise, hired a moronic cast of buffoons for his cabinet, and created insider trading bigger than all presidents combined in the history of our country....yeah, a 54 year old, card carrying Republican for the last 36 years would rather go back and elect Harris. We would not be in Iran. We would not have crazy price increases. We would not have 8% interest rates. We would not have $1.5T of defense spending against "enemies" that do not exist. The Republican controlled congress would have kicked the can down the road on the budget like they always do, but she would have gotten absolutely nothing done in 4 years and been replaced by an actual candidate, like Bernie above and Carter. And I prefer that over Trump's shit sandwich in a country that is going to swing so far blue over his idiocy that Biden's trans policies and millions of immigrants walking over the border are going to look mild.

When was the LAST Republican that DIDN'T leave office with The US in a recession?

Agree that Jo Jorgenson (who I also voted for) would likely have been a 'bleh' President. My vote for her was more 'fuck these other two jokers' than thinking she would do a great job.

I honestly think that Gary Johnson would have been a legitimately good President. He had a solid record as Governor of New Mexico and while his 'open door, let everyone have a voice' leadership style and refusal to pass any spending he viewed as wasteful would not have worked on the national stage, I think he would have pivoted and figured it out.

I also would have preferred Bernie Sanders to Clinton, mostly because I agree that there was a very small chance that Bernie could actually accomplish anything (much like his Senate record... lots of talk, very little in the way of actual results)

Even on his campaign, that is what he ran on. It would not work on a national stage. And ceratinl would not work against the dictators of the world. Gary was heavily outmatched when it came to foreign affairs, and if I remember correctly, he really, REALLY fumbled some really basic foreign policy questions in interviews.
