I'm always interested by how people end up at their jobs. There are so many random jobs out there that no one could have imagined they would hold growing up.
So did you target your profession or did you just fall into it?
For me, it's kinda in between but I'd say moreso I fell into it, because I always planned to be a broadcaster/journalist growing up, and that's not what I am.
I'd love to hear people's stories if they want to share.

Mines a little different than most in it's structure...
I was saving up to teach diving elsewhere(my first profession) by working as a lead decker(my second profession) when i fell off a building and was told i couldn't do construction anymore and had to put my diving on hold until i got some "upgrading", since i like fish and animals and would like to eventually be able to work in Aquariums and other conservation forms, i convinced them to allow me to enroll to start Animal Health Studies(Veterinary Courses). I start April 14th.
If nothing else it will be an adventure. and by the time i'm done school, i will have money and the physical ability to go back to diving if i so choose.
That's it. :|

Awesome first profession, and potentially awesome career as a vet.
As a pet owner I have seen great vets and s--- ones that seemed like they didn't even like animals. Pets are part of the family and they should get quality treatment.

I'm excited, but there is a lot of peoples politics with Animal Care i have to ignore, but i'm sure it's the same as having a job to do with laws. You may not like the way people think, so it's better to just focus on the job.

There are politics anytime people work together unfortunately. It's one of the crappiest parts of being a professional.

This included working in a kitchen, a bike shop, as a bike courier, an insurance office, production assistant for tv commercials, running a theatre (also learning to juggle).
I wouldn't call it a career though exactly, but writing's long been in my blood.

fiction at the moment - right now I'm juggling a few things - the one that's occupying most of my time is a zombie movie. It's actually part of the story I mentioned above, but is taking on a life of its own (so to speak).

I got invited to leave home after two years of playing ball and chasing coeds in college. Being lazy, I took the easy way out and joined the Navy. After I got in, all I wanted to do was get the hell out, but they kept offering me pretty good orders if I would just stay in a little longer...needless to say, 20 years and 15 days later I retired. After a year off sitting around doing a lot of nothing, I took my current job to keep from going crazy. Two and a half years later, I'm still not crazy (at least, any more crazy than when I started) so I guess it's working.
I'd love to write fiction, but I couldn't pimp myself out to be successful.

I wanted to make it about the not-so-distant future where there are so many humans inhabiting the planet that animal meat has all but vanished. Only the richest and most powerful people can afford it. For example, a steak would be a luxury of the highest order.

Its interesting Dre said he wanted to be a broadcaster, because thats what i had always wanted to be. On career day in high school i went to a local tv station and sat in on one of their broadcast. That was part of the reason i initially chose Arizona State. Because of the Walter Cronkite school of journalism.
My current job i fell into as a result of being laid off from my last. I had been a sales supervisor for MCI Worldcom, and after the accounting scandal (it wasnt me :? ) they closed our whole center and 1000 of us were let go. They shopped our resumes around to local companies and i had offers from several good companies.
Ultimately, i went with Amex because they've been around for 140yrs and i figured they were the most stable. (prior to the recession).
Although, had the Worldcom scandal not happened i'm sure i would still be there. I loved my job/co workers. I'm making more money now, but it goes to show if you like what you're doing the money isnt as important.

My career is actually my backup plan. I got my degree in Math and had no idea what I wanted to do with it. It took me to the end of my undergrad to figure out that I wanted to be a chef, and I didn't want to waste 4 years of school without a piece of paper, so I finished, and promptly enrolled in culinary school, completed my chef's papers, and landed a very good job cooking in probably the nicest hotel in Ottawa (Chateau Laurier) as a saucier(sauce guy) 2 years later I busted up by back and ended my cooking career. At the end of university I had applied to be an air traffic controller as a possible backup to cooking if it fell through. Lo and behold, 2 months after getting out of rehab for my back, they came a knocking. Been doing it now for the last 10 years, and love every minute of it.

After flunking out of Carleton University 3 times, I kicked around a bit (well, more than a bit) and did a variety of interesting, but menial jobs. I used nepotism to get involved in the film business somewhere along the line - my sister owned a small company - then used that experience later to get a job on a television series. Though I don't work anymore, I had a productive 10 year run.

Well I got my degree from OSU, did the whole interviewing circuit and actually thought I had landed myself a nice job with Fifth-Third as a branch manager. (HR guy I interviewed with literally promised me the job)
I went home for winter break and I get a call two days after Christmas saying that they had given the job to someone with more experience, but that I could still work some head teller or assistant type job for about half of what the position I applied for paid.
I told them to go f--- themselves, signed up with a temp agency and landed the job I work at now.
Been here about four and a half years and while it's not my dream career I'm good at what I do and it pays pretty well after the raises I've recieved.
I still keep a lookout for job openings in the area and occasionally do interview for those openings. Always seems to follow the same script though, either it's 100% comission based or they say, "wow, we're blown away by you... but look, you just don't have the experience required for this position. Regardless, we'd like to take you on in an entry level capacity, you'll basically grind it out for a year or so, learn what the business is all about and then you should be moved up to the position you're applying for... oh, and this job starts out at $32,000 a year, not the $60,000-70,000 a year like the job you were applying for that we were talking about"
I always turn those offers down and I'm right back to where I am now.
I tried to give it a go playing basketball for a living (was looking at playing overseas), but injuries just piled up. At 27, that's really not a possiblity anymore.
I have no idea what I would even want to do if I was offered every job in the world... I get bored very easily.

I also think it would be cool to make a movie about the angel wars in heaven and the eventual formation of Hell.
It would be super sweet. I would have huge angels fighting each other...all badass looking. It would rule.

Actually I always thought that would be a wicked movie. I mean the potential for insane CGI and the most badass fight scenes ever produced is limitless. The Biblical account of Lucifer's rebellion, heavenly war, and eventual banishment from heaven is compelling.....but also brief and vague....so you have your basic story with LOTS of room to have an awesome interpretation. Plus, the whole heaven and hell thing means the most beautiful and most horrifying scenes in cinema.
