Hey, has anyone ever raised birds for meat? for releasing into the wild? or for a game preserve by chance?
I'm buying a few goodies and some fertilized eggs this coming week and was just curious if anyone on the forum had done such a thing...
Feedback is definitely cool.. When I was younger my mom and I would hatch chicken eggs and sell them in the community..
I'll be raising quail (bobwhite) in hopes of having them forage the ground of a permaculture project I'm working on in South Carolina (returning their manure back to the soil).
Thanks,
z
We were trying to raise Pheasant when I was about 14. Make sure you have a space big enough for them, as we had about 60 I think and a lot of them would break each other's legs, and then ended up dying off. I think only about 5-10 ended up reaching maturity. Other then that I don't remember much of it.

That would be KFQ, wouldn't it?
Very cool, Zach. I could tell you about chickens, but you seem to know that stuff already. Good luck with the quail, and keep us posted!

This is what I recall about chickens:
1. Only have one rooster. More than one rooster will cause in a fight for dominance, including rapes and/or murder.
2. Isolate chicks. Older chickens (especially the rooster) will stomp them dead.
3. Clip one wing, so they can't fly out of the coop.
4. Don't use large containers for water. Chicks will drown in them.

Copper is also an expert on chicken rape. Why am I not surprised?

For the record, my answer about raising chickens was completely serious.
I figure other domesticated birds have similar instincts/behaviors.

Thanks bro. My uncle has raised quail a bit, and the birds aren't near as territorial with their offspring as say chickens are.. Chickens are larger birds as well.
A big enough enclosure is key, that's for sure. I've seen roosters cannabalise young and generally treat everything around them as if they're all inferior.
I'll have a 6x6" box with fine wire mesh for the younglings, and a heat lamp.
Quail are unique as they can produce eggs at as young as 18 weeks.

I think you should raise some veggies. I'm not a big fan of your kind.

I have multiple gardens going already... What do you mean 'my kind'?
Are you discouraged at the thought of me raising them to eat?
That's not my intention, as stated above.
I'm raising them to forage some of my land, manure and fertilize.
So what are you trying to say?

By your "kind" I mean people that show pictures of (pheasant, duck, quail) babies and then go on an MMA message board to see if anyone has tips on how to raise them.

Well I don't need to hear it from you jackass. If the thread was unappealing why the f--- did you reply? Attention-getter.
Way to ruin it.
Any others who enjoy posting constructive replies, be my guest.

I have a thriving hobby chicken farm & I've done it with no experience what so ever. I just go to "BackYardChickens.com" and there is absolutly ANYTHING you need to know there, as well as a friendly comunity on the forums. They have a section on other birds such as Quail, Phesant,Duck & I'm sure they can answer any questions you may have or at least direct you to someone who can. Good luck with your project.
it's illegal to raise animals for agricultural purposes in the city here - but you can keep them as pets... wtf?
there was a group lobbying to keep agricultural chickens in the city, but the Humane Society (like the SPCA) said that they had enough trouble with neglected cats and dogs, let alone adding chickens to the list...
I gather the laws are different where you're at, or you're raising them in the country, or because you're raising them for the guano, then it's OK.
anyway, keep us posted. I'm curious.
Also, bacon-wrapped quail was one of my favourite dinners ever (at a local Newfie Bistro).
