This makes me angry. How in the hell can boxing be considered safer than MMA when there's been 1300+ deaths worldwide since the year 2000 and something like 3 deaths in MMA? I think these idiots are just judging knees, punches, kicks and elbows but ruling out how safe it is to not take a standing count in boxing, where they're not really recovering.
In MMA if you're hurt and in danger then the ref stops it. In boxing you get dropped and get given a chance to recover, but really you're not recovering, furthering the chances of future head trauma.

I think there was a thread on this when the report came out.
Basically, the report is massively flawed. The study watched videos to determine the condition of the fighters. Absolutely no actual physical examinations were done. They also make the generalisation that every TKO resulted in traumatic brain injury, which is ridiculous.
But, unfortunately, we live in a world where people read something on the internet and think it must be true, and when they read the words "Study says..." they refuse to even question the reliability of it.

Statistics and studies...both can be manipulated quite easily.
This particular "study" more than likely isn't worth the paper it's printed on other than wiping your' a$$ with it.
I'm not that smart, but no way will anyone ever convince me that 12 rds of pounding over an extended period of time is safer than the typical 3-5 rd MMA matches over the same time frame.
Of course, a fighters style and defensive capabilities play into the equation as well

I'm an MMA fan that considers boxing to be one of the most boring and un-watchable sports around. But I agree with this report.
The knockouts in boxing aren't nearly as brutal or disfiguring as those in MMA. The size of the gloves and being able to use elbows and knees also make a huge difference. In MMA you also get to hit a guy while he's down, where the head has no room to absorb the blows.
To me it's a no brainer, boxing is safer than MMA. But as far as I'm concerned, Safer=More Boring.

Neither are "safe"....but at the end of the day this is what these men/women have chosen to compete in. Just like a football/hockey player who know they are going to get hit/jarred every single night. It's pro sports folks, this is not an involuntary thing.

The average 4 deaths a year from boxing versus the one attributable death to MMA clearly show you're right.

That's the only argument that you can make in favor of MMA being the safer sport. But it's a weak one.
The truth is MMA fighters are constantly getting "rocked" or are "out on their feet" yet they continue to fight and a lot of times come out victorious (like Hendo did against Rua (twice) or Hendricks did against Lawlar). Hell, a lot of times fighters black out momentarily, but continue to fight on. Not having the benefit of a standing 8 count doesn't make it any more safer in my opinion.

And you somehow don't think this happens in boxing? That it's a phenomenon that is solely within MMA?

This is what is wrong with the study and the people that believe it. It is the assumption that knockouts are the main cause of trauma, and not huge amount of repeated blows over time. Boxers take more strikes to the head per round then MMA fighters, with more rounds per fight. That is why there is so much damage in the NFL, because on every play there are many collisions, even though huge brutal knockouts are rare, it isnt the big knockouts causing the majority of the damage, its the quantity of collisions.
The size of the gloves actually causes MORE trauma, the death rates in boxing skyrocketed when they introduced gloves, because gloves are not designed to protect the head but to protect the hands, so without having to worry about breaking your hand you were free to punch harder.

Crazy no one has mentioned how boxing gloves are what 16oz? That alone will cause more damage. The standing 8 count allows someone to get back in the fight (visually, looks like they are ok) even if they haven't fully recovered. Your brain can recover about 30% and make you look like you are fine just because you aren't falling down and looking straight. The whole time the boxer is thinking wtf is going on, yeah I'll keep fighting I guess.
No idea how this even compares. MMA has brutal looking KOs but they are usually from hits on the button when they look like that. That is your brain switching into safety mode and protecting itself. Boxing KOs or punches are gradually putting dents in the brain (not for real) compared to MMA KOs making the brain switch off for a moment.
The gloves should be enough to tell what does more damage.

Hendricks vs. Lawler was almost strictly a boxing match... but if one of them goes down the fight wouldve been called in mma, but a standing 8 count would allow them to recover and take more damage in boxing, so mma is more dangerous then boxing?
The most dangerous MMA fights are ones that mimic boxing, and youre using that as evidence that MMA is more dangerous?

4 to 1 doesn't totally decide it, we'd need a number of how many boxing and mma fights were held in that year too.
But still common sense says boxing is more dangerous. One sport, the goal is to hit the other guy in the head the entire time. The other sport, thats only part of the goal. I can go on and on too....Unless we're talking about EFC...
