He says a lot of strange things and is trying to be funny most of the time.
But he seemed serious when he claimed that Rousey broke a jaw when sparring.

No s---!! While I have a ton of respect for Gene I gotta wonder WTF he was thinking, aside from the fact he is a Judoka and has always felt it the best grappling art for combat. Hell Rousey is not fast enough to even catch Lee before he died. That makes snese now, Gene means NOW she could beat his corpse.

I don't think think Gene was being very serious. He had the pro wrestling shtick going on there and on the Bruce Lee doc.

I was just watching the Bruce Lee documentary on Spike and Gene just seemed to joke the entire way. I am sure he was just joking around.

I didn't watch the documentary that is making everybody rejizz about Bruce Lee, but from what I do remember when I looked up stuff about him was that he didn't really actually fight. He didn't engage in sport fighting and therefore I think most professional athlete fighters would beat him in an MMA match. This idea is assuming we just take Bruce Lee and don't train him in MMA and just put him in a cage at his peak and do the same for Rousey (not training specifically for Bruce Lee). I'd take her too.

Lol, relax buddy. He also didn't do any full-contact fighting outside of China, so we have no idea about his actual skill. Most of the information we have about his actual fighting skill is testimony. Now we have the opinion of a guy who actually trained with him, and does know something about fighting being that he was in the first prototypical MMA match in recent history, and he said Rousey would win. Now, he may be joking or senile, but that's a problem with testimony over hard evidence.

Bruce was well known in Hong Kong for the numerous street fights he had and won.

Mac,
I agree with you 100%. We had a whole thread on this and there are just too many folks on this forum that believe the legend of Bruce Lee. I have a hard time believing that they actually understand the sport if they believe a movie star would be competitive against true athletes. It is kind of like believing Rocky Balboa would beat Mike Tyson. Rocky looks great and did you see him do those log squats in the snow?
LeBell is the REAL deal and so is Rousey. Bruce Lee was great entertainer who should receive credit for turning a lot of kids onto martial arts but not thought of as a fighter.

There are two extreme viewpoints on Bruce Lee: At one extreme, he was the greatest martial artist of all time. At the other extreme, he was just a great entertainer who should not be thought of as a martial artist. The truth is probably somewhere in between. The technique, speed, precision and power that he demonstrated would have translated very well into real fighting. He had his own martial arts school. His philosophy and teachings are respected and have real applicability in martial arts. All of this suggests that he was a formidable martial artist and probably a good (if untested) fighter. But he was also a great showman, movie star, and self-promoter. Was he the greatest martial artist of all time? No. The greatest fighter? Certainly not; he didn't fight professionally and didn't get into street fights once he became famous. But he certainly was a respected martial artist, and comparing him to Sylvester Stallone borders on ridiculous.

TRUE martial arts are a COMBAT sport and if there is not an opponent fighting back it is NOT combat (think storefront karate studios and board breaking). Having pretty katas and choreography is much closer to dance than combat. That makes him a formidable dancer not any reflection on his fighter status. There is no way to predict how a punch would actually work in combat without it being tested in a fight and there is no way to tell how a dazzling display can work in a real fight with real pressure from a real opponent. If you cannot agree with that then there is no real reason for guys to fight in the octagon but rather they could just do katas, have the judges judge and thereby spare everybody the potential for injury.
Most admit he did not fight so therefore his exhibitions were examples of what could be done with no opponent fighting back . Sounds just like Rocky to me.
