Tatame is reporting that they have been told that the WEC will be merging with the UFC early in 2010:
Biggest MMA event of the planet, UFC has plans even bigger to 2010. Sources close to WEC informed TATAME.com that the UFC will add new weights categories on the next year, bringing athletes with contract with WEC, that was bought by Zuffa – same organization that commands the UFC – in 2006.
...
On the next Wednesday, WEC 44 will define the featherweight champion on the fight between Mike Brown and José Aldo, what could, joining the events, define who would become the first UFC featherweight champion. Besides that, WEC has two more shows scheduled until January 2010.
We've been hearing rumors of the pending merger for months now. Clearly at this point it is still a rumor but it is entirely possible that all the trouble with injuries has forced the UFC's hand. Knowing that you'll have entire weight classes full of potential fights is likely very appealing when the promotion seems to lose another bout every other day.
We'll continue to monitor the situation and will try to get confirmation of the story.

About damn time.. In boxing the most exciting weight classes and the weight classes with the most known fighters are the 147pound division and the 140 pound division. From De La Hoya, Pac-Man, Cotto, Mayweather, Mosley, Hatton, Bradley, Judah, Marquez, Diaz, Sugar Ray Leanoard, Hernes, Duran, Forrst, Wright, Mayorga, Trinidad, Vargas. Hopefully this merger will creat a whole new brand of STARS.> Starting with JOSE ALDO! (Of course Torres and Faber are known as well).

The UFC better do something. The big name stars in the heavier weight classes are dropping like flies right now, and Strikeforce is on CBS.
I'm not saying the UFC should hit the panic button, but I am saying some adjustments are probably in order.

They should launch this by having a season of TUF (12?) be BW and FW.
I say, hold out the top 4 guys from each division, and have kind of a mini tournament on the Fight Night season premiere show (or nearest PPV), Season Finale (or nearest PPV), and then give the winner in each class a title shot. If they fight their way through a house full of WEC vets, they would deserve it.

The best thing about the merger will be watching Jamie Varner get the s--- beaten out of him over and over again until he's cut. The WEC lightweight division will not be able to hack it in the UFC.

that's what I don't like about this. There are some great fighters to watch in that division.

I agree. He's very good. But the majority of the WEC lightweight division is pretty crappy.

Current UFC LWs would be dropping too. There is no escape.
I'm sure the top 3 or so WEC LWs will find some success. I doubt any of them will become serious contenders though. I just really hate Varner and hope he fails miserably.

If they do merge the big thing for the UFC would to slowly bring up these WEC guys
Like put some fights on spike cards or a minor bout on a ppv
They cant rush and put like a Aldo vs Brown (just an example) as a headliner or co-main event because then they wont get any ppv buys because they arent big names to the casual fans
What do you guys think?

Agreed, it will be great to see BW and FW in the UFC... but the LW in WEC are basically going to comprise the lower tier of 155 in UFC.... (esp. Varner)
I think they should got to 140 and 125 for BW and FW.... if you cant make the cut to 140, then fight at 155 ! hahahahah
Cant wait for all of these great fighters to fight under the UFC umbrella... gonna be tough for UFC to get every weight class at every event....

I'm glad this is happening, sucks in some sense that WEC will be gone and possibly so will there free events, but I think a merger will help add extra high level depth and can make a better push for a network deal.

This is bad for the large majority of WEC fighters, especially in the lightweight division who will be seriously outclassed by the UFC guys (other than Ben Henderson. He gets better every time out, and is well on his way to becoming a beast in the division). The flyweights are in some trouble too. What happens when some of the current UFC lightweights decide to drop and attempt to win that title too. I mean, what if BJ decides he wants to win a title in three weight classes and drops. What if Kflo drops because he knows he can't beat BJ? I don't think Brown or Faber could win a fight against either of them. Heck, I think they'd have some trouble with a guy like Joe Stevenson...

I wouldn't say for the majority, for the five or so light weights yeah. But for 135 & 145'er it'll be good, I'm guessing increase in sponser money.

True, the ability to go to sponsors with the promise of more TV time would be a good thing. I'm just saying that the top guys in the WEC at 145 and 155 except for Ben Henderson are going to have some trouble with the UFC fighters right off the bat.

i'd say 135'ers are safe. There maybe a few who drop at 145, but your assuming the guys in the UFC are just better, but I believe the 145'er in the WEC are the best in the world, BJ could provide trouble, but serious, I can't see him even making an attempt to cut the weight.
