Jake Shields (#3 BJPenn.com WW) is attempting to pull out all the stops in preparation for his UFC welterweight title fight with Georges St. Pierre, as he revealed on "The Fight Show" that he's bringing in Ben Askren and Chael Sonnen (#2 BJPenn.com MW) to help him prepare for the biggest fight of his career.
Askren, who went to the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing, has one of the best wrestling pedigrees in MMA, and is also the reigning Bellator Welterweight Champion. MMA fans should already be very familiar with Chael Sonnen, as his brash talk and epic battle with Anderson Silva last summer, have made him one of the focal points in the MMA media. Not withstanding all that, Shields recognizes where Sonnen can assist him, as his wrestling has proven to be very effective throughout his career.
What's interesting to note is the two different styles that both men will offer in terms of training, as Askren is a free-style wrestler, while Sonnen was a standout in Greco-Roman wrestling. Shields will be carrying a 15-fight win streak into the Octagon with notable victories over Yushin Okami, Carlos Condit, Nick Thompson, Mike Pyle, Paul Daley, Robbie Lawler, Jason Miller, Dan Henderson, and Martin Kampmann.

Bet he's subbing both of them regularly. He needs to bring in more strikers as well. GSPs top game is good though.

Smart move.
Hopefully this helps his takedowns to be more explosive.

very smart move
but I doubt GSP will take this fight to the ground and Shields cant take GSP down, so he should be working on his striking

I dunno man.
There is no way his striking can improve that much THAT quickly imo.
I think he has the right idea of sticking to his strengths....
I'm sure he is working on his striking as well, but he HAS to get this fight to the ground. I think he knows that too.

Probably a good idea, as long as he doesn't try to learn anything else from Sonnen, like real estate, public relations, business ethics, or saying no to drugs.

I think shields has the 1 hes larger and thicker than gsp i see shields going for the single and grinding gsp to a close decision giving gsp a taste of his own damn medicine.

The Greg Jackson game plan for GSP will be to take Shields down immediately. Shields better be learning with these wrestlers on top if he wants to have any chance at this fight. The thing is, neither Sonnen nor Askren are anywhere near as good as GSP with mma wrestling. Pure wrestling, sure, they're awesome, but they don't have anything on GSP when it comes to the use of wrestling/bjj in mma.

Wouldn't GSP just stand up for this fight instead of taking Shields down since shields poses less threat standing?

Shields only chance to win this fight is by submission, why in the hell would the gameplan be for GSP to take him down? GSP stood with Kos for 5 rounds and Kos has better striking, more power, and much worse BJJ than Shields. GSP is going to sprawl and brawl all night.

Good move by Shields. He's also worked with Ben Askren. He'll be ready for GSPs wrestling.

Have you not watched mma? Greg Jackson's game plan consists of beating you at your own game and forcing you to improvise. For instance, it was thought that Josh Koscheck had the better boxing when he fought GSP. GSP came out and thoroughly outboxed Josh Koscheck. Here's another instance, Ryan Bader was thought to be the better pure wrestler when he fought Jon Jones. Jones came out and almost immediately took Bader down.

Possibly, but Shields' submission game is very top-based. GSP putting Shields on his back means Shields can't get the takedown and wind up on top.

What Shields really needs to do is train his striking and figure out how to get GSP on his back cause if GSP uses the same strategy he always uses (strikes with the grapplers & grapple with the strikers) then Shields win streak & WW title dreams will come to an abrupt stop!

You must be on crack lol at koscheck having the better boxing when he fought GSP. Kosheck striking has always been sloppy he just has that over hadn right. Jackson doesn't not make gameplans to beat you in your own game. ROFLMAO. Bader was maybe a better at folkstyle wrestling but it was clear the JJ had the better all around grappling before the fight.
