Where does Shinya Aoki stand after his loss to Nagashima? To be honest I thought the fight was a joke. Aoki looked like a talentless fool running around the ring. It amazes me that this guy is ranked in the top 10 lightweights on so many websites. Melendez proved all you need is a solid wrestling game to defeat him, and Aoki showed zero stand up in his fight with Nagashima.

s--- happens, Aoki is very smart, why would he try and engage with Nagashima when he could coast the first round and try get the submission in the second? Didn't work out but nevertheless it was the best gameplan. You would be sat here calling him the same things if he went balls out trying to strike with nagashima and got knocked out. Aoki was too confident early in round 2, he should have done the same as he did in round 1, he had nagashinas back so many times and had so many good takedown positions.
People need to stop just looking at fighters latest fights before writing them off, he got caught by a brilliantly timed flying knee, props to Nagashima, it should not be a bad thing for Aoki, all he did was time a takedown wrong, it happens, does not mean he is automatically redundant in a convo about who is the best LW in the world. Fact is, Aoki can submit anyone on any given day, he couldn't sub Melendez on that day but I expect he will submit him in a rematch, Aoki would destroy Nagashima 19 times out of 20, that was just an accident today and should not be on his MMA record as it wasn't all MMA, thats like putting the fedor-aoki exhibition on his record FFS.
Aoki still has one of the best ground games in all of MMA, his striking is weak and his takedowns are mediocre at best but when it hits the mat he can end careers in seconds. The guy is a genious on the ground, give him some respect please. He went out and fought a great kickboxer for 3 minutes, he had the balls to go in there and do it, you do not however so stop hating please.

Aoki is too small his wrestling might be a little better if he had strength. He should go to the UFC's featherweight for a lot less money now that he lost...again and see where he ranks there.
Ps. Counting this on AOKI's MMA rankings is like counting K-1 on Overeems MMA rankings..so which is it?..Make up YOUR mind PEOPLE.

Tough call. He tapped both Kawarji and Alvarez, and he did so pretty easily. Those guys are top LW's and Aoki took them out with ease. You can't just ignore that, and it's not like those fights were many years ago.
By the same token, he's got some recent piss poor fights. Though, besides his loss to Melendez, it seems like his spectacle fights have led to his knock outs. It hasn't been LW's in MMA fight knocking him out.
I really don't know where he stands. He's been like Hellboy lately, zero consistency.

i'm wondering what in the hell aoki would've had to do to get penalized in that first round. that was just ridiculous. would just love to see the guy show a good stand up game. it would just make him that much more dangerous.

Aoki is finally getting exposed for what he is. A one trick pony and a small one at that. The guy would get destroyed by a dozen or so fighters in the UFC. I don't mean beaten, I mean destroyed. The fights wouldn't be close.

Officially it has no effect. Unofficially it can't help but to hurt Aoki's image, especially in Japan. The last 2 Dynamite shows have not been good for Aoki's image.

I was laughing pretty hard when he was just throwing the double drop kicks over and over. But I understand that he just wanted to just run out the clock for the K-1 round. Then right at the beginning of the second round he went for the takedown and got caught with a knee. I think that was really the best thing he could have done.

what do you want him to do? trade with the stud k-1 fighter? i think not. he did everything he could to let the time roll off. he shot to early for a td and got caught. perfect timing on the knee.
it doesnt hurt aokis image or his rank at LW.
he has owned everyone but melendez at LW.

I don't hate Shinya Aoki, I hate his fans who try to explain that he's some kind of lightweight God. He's not. You can't be
that
one dimensional and be considered amongst the very best in the world in the most stacked division worldwide there is. He's usually an entertaining fight for sure, but that's about it.

thats your opinon.
He isnt one demensional. he is a black belt in judo and JJ.
he has a style no one can realy replicate. looks one demensional but it works. Overly aggressive fighters are fighters Aoki does well against and the top of the top are pretty aggresive. in order to be one of the best you have to have a skillset where you are the best at.
but then agin there are plenty of fightes at the top with one demensional skill sets.

Sure it works, against fair to middling fighters with little to no wrestling ability. He fights a whole lot of fights within his comfort zone. That's an unfortunate by-product of fighting in Japan.
Throw him in there with Gray Maynard or Frankie Edgar and he gets embarrassed. Throw him in there with BJ Penn, whose jitz skills are an equal level, and he gets absolutely destroyed. Lets see him fight Nate Diaz and get jabbed to death. How about a fight with Kenny Florian? Can he handle the striking? Nope. Gilbert Melendez made him look like an amateur fighting his very first fight. At that point, the cat was out of the bag. Shinya Aoki isn't
that
good. If you have solid takedown defense and halfway decent striking, you're probably going to beat him.
