In the most bizarre matchmaking in recent history, Brazil will possibly watch the first professional MMA fight between man and woman in its history.
Shooto Brazil announced on Tuesday that its 45th edition, set to take place next Friday in Rio de Janeiro, will feature a three-round bantamweight fight between Emerson Falcao (0-1) and Juliana Velasquez (0-0).
Nova Uniao’s Falcao made his MMA debut last April, suffering a first-round submission loss to Benny Blackat at Upper Sport Combat 2. Velasquez, one inch shorter, trains at Team Nogueira.
Falcao posted on his Facebook page
on Monday night that he’s injured and wouldn’t be able to fight until next year, and several sources close to the fighter confirmed the information to MMAFighting.com. However, Shooto president Andre Pederneiras told MMAFighting.com that Falcao will be able to compete on Friday night.
"Andre Pederneiras came up with the idea," Velasquez told MMAFighting.com. "He asked Team Nogueira for a female fighter and my team believes I’m ready, so I accepted the challenge. My expectations are the best. I’m well trained to get there and win.
"I’m used to training with man every day. I’m a professional judoka and I know the adrenaline of the competition, I know how to handle this."
Shooto Brazil 45 will be headlined by a flyweight title fight which is a rematch between
Alexandre Pantoja
and Lincoln de Sa. Pantoja and de Sa fought for the first time at Shooto Brazil 32 on July 2012, and de Sa won the bout in a controversial decision. Both fighters are 2-0 since the decision.

Let's be honest, the only inter-gender fight we want to see is Bryan Caraway VS any female on the UFC roster that doesn't like him.

It's already happened a few times in the US. I think bum fights has better matchmaking than this.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here.
While I'm not sure how competitive this match will be, ill advised male vs male fights are set up all the times. Especially among newly turned pros. I watched two guys from my gym pound guys that had no business being in the ring with them last month. Ours guys trained hard (5+ times a week), their guys looked like they stumbled in from the bar.
If they really sought out a female who is highly skilled, who trains hard and has the opportunity to actually win this fight, I'm not too sure I have a problem with it. I don't know the people, so I'm not sure if this is the case.

I think there is too much downside and not enough upside for this. Luckily it's not a high profile promotion. People that train know that girls train with guys all the time so it's not such a far fetched idea... these girls know the deal. But the general public, and even the general MMA fan will be screaming side show about this, especially if it is a one-sided affair. And the guy is in a complete no win situation. If he loses, the guy's career is basically over. If he wins, congratulations you beat a girl. I hope he's getting paid well.
I think there would be MAJOR problems if the guy wound up GnPing her out too. Can you imagine how MMA haters would go nuts with that? Some guy in the full mount pounding the crap out of a girl (even if that girl wanted to be in that cage)?

It'll be a guy who is 0-1 (kickboxer) from Nova União and a girl 0-0 (jiu-jitsu)from team Nogueira and there will be special rules, though Pederneiras hasn't revealed them yet.

I get your DA position but I still don't like it. Fighting should not set the precedent to mix genders in professional sports. They tried it in hockey in an exhibition game with Manon Rheaume but that was it. It was hard enough for me to accept women's fighting but with this there is just way too many things that could go wrong. If this was just an exhibition or something non-competitive it would be a different story.

I agree. The last thing this sport needs is the image of a guy beating up a girl.

I'm all for woman's rights and s--- but this is just all out ridiculas. This woman needs to be decisively beaten so that silly and dangerous fights like these never happen again. This guy could be crap and lose, so then the organisers think hey, let's set the next one up and that's when deaths or serious injuries will occur.

It's clearly publicity stunt but they're both from decent camp and they both seem to have similar levels of experience, so there are far worst ways that they could go about it. I am kind of curious as to how they're going to market this fight.

Can you imagine a full grown man brutally KOing a woman with a head kick or overhand? IMO, it's not something that should ever be legal outside of self defense.
