All of the speculation about Kimbo Slice being boxing champion James Toney's first opponent in an MMA bout has been put to rest as of today. The UFC announced via its official website that Kimbo Slice (4-1) will take on his "The Ultimate Fighter" season 10 cast mate Matt Mitrione (1-0) at "UFC 113: Machida Vs. Shogun 2" on May 8th.
The bout was declared some time ago but was apparently put into jeopardy when the Mitrione-Slice bout was pulled from the UFC 113 card on the UFC's website. This naturally sparked speculation of a Slice-Toney bout when the UFC's announcement of Toney's signing coincided exactly with the disappearance of the Mitrione-Slice fight.
Even Matt Mitrione was in the dark until presumably today; telling the Las Vegas Sun, "To be truly honest, I haven't heard a thing from the UFC, and it's frustrating me."
His fears can now be put to rest as he will get a chance to improve his MMA (and UFC) record to 2-0. Mitrione impressed in his official MMA debut at the TUF 10 finale where he knocked out Marcus Jones emphatically in the second round.
While Slice made his MMA debut in 2007 fighting for Elite XC; he took to the Octagon for the first time in five fights also at the TUF 10 finale. He took on beleaguered but hard hitting UFC veteran Houston Alexander and took home a dominant unanimous decision win.
UFC 113 will take place in at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
