These are the new rules to improve the pace of matches at the World Cup

Back in March, FIFA introduced a series of new rules designed to combat time-wasting and help games run quicker and smoother.

1. Timed substitutions

A substituted player will have 10 seconds to leave the field. If they take longer, the incoming player must wait one full minute before entering, leaving their team temporarily a man down.

2. Time limits on restarts

Goal kicks and throw‑ins must be taken within five seconds. If a team exceeds the limit, possession will be handed to the opposing team.

3. Medical attention off the field

Except in cases involving a yellow‑card foul, any player requesting medical treatment must remain off the field for one minute while being evaluated, with the sole exception being injuries caused by a foul that led to a card for an opposing player.

4. Only the team captain is allowed to approach the referee

Only the team captain is allowed to protest or question a referee’s decision. Any other player who approaches the match official risks an immediate yellow card. This is stop players crowding refs to protest or intimidate.

5. Expanded VAR authority

VAR officials can now review second yellow cards which result in a player being sent off, as well as incorrectly awarded corner kicks.

This gives video review a broader role in preventing game‑changing mistakes.

It was a free kick to the other side in red and Modric kicked the ball away so he was wasting time if the other teams ahead. The lad in red pushed him for wasting time and Modric went to confront him, but both guys received yellow cards. Red for the push and white for kicking the ball away, he didn’t receive the yellow for confronting him.

I gotta say that is a very nice welcome by the City of Chattanooga.
