Story steps up to fight Marquardt a month after a tough fight with Alves. Then 1 day before the fight he says yes to fighting Brenneman - a completely different type of fighter.
Goes into this fight, gets held down for 2 rounds and then wins the 3rd. And when I say held down, I'm talking a lay on top hugging, Jon Fitch held down. It was ridiculous. Brenneman outsmarted the ref by being a little busy when he had to but he never improved position, never caused any damage, he just laid there. It was a pathetic showing and I'm unsure why Brenneman is getting so much props for this fight. Rick Story's status in the WW should not be affected by this fight at all, it was a joke. He should continue to climb the ladder instead of start over again. With all the talk about his horrible takedown defense I was surprised to see how well he actually was doing in the first round. Then he got taken down and just held...and held....and held. With more time to prepare for this fight both physically/gameplan wise, Story wins this fight with ease.

Sooo a fighter that takes a fight a month after a tough fight...and then has to switch to a completely different styled opponent the DAY before that fight....isn't allowed to make excuses? And in the end it's not even Story making the excuses, it's a fan.
I think we officially expect wayyyyy too much out of these guys.

The Spaniard was also in danger or dropping in the ranking (as well as getting fired for a loss).
It's a risk all fighters take (last-minute changes). No one forced Story to fight.
But I can agree that Nate's flaky behavior didn't help one bit.

LOL but if he didn't take the fight everyone would be calling him a p---- and blah blah blah. Story will fight anyone, anytime and he proved it. Problem is the Spaniard didn't come to fight, he came to hug. All I'm saying is that this loss shouldn't lead people to believe Story is overrated or needs to go back and fight mid-level fighters again. He definitely did not get dominated in this one. Give him a full training camp for Brenneman and I think he'd win it pretty easy and show people that wasn't his best fight. I realize he took the chance, I'm just saying his ranking shouldn't be affected by it like it would have if he lost to Marquardt or got destroyed by CB. His takedown defense was really good for the first half of the first but once he went down...he just got held down...and held...and held......and....end round 1. He is by far the more dynamic fighter...just got held down like a big brother would do to his 5 year old brother for 7.5 minutes. Might have bit off more than he can chew with only a month in between fights though - that can't be easy. Either way I respect Story for doing what he did for this UFC and want him to keep fighting top guys, and while I liked Brenneman before, I lost a lot of respect for him with his terrible Fitch strategy.

I think it was more than holding. Otherwise they would have got stood up.
Brenneman was possessed by the living spirit of Ben Askren and managed to stay active the entire time.

The excuses statement was toward you not Story.
Also I think your missing the point.
I put it pretty simple I thought. Rick agreed to fight on a day's notice. He didnt have to, he knew what he was getting into. I dont care whether its peer pressure or not. You take the fight, deal with the consequences. He shouldnt get a special deal because he takes a fight on short notice. Rankings are real & cant be turned off because you think someone couldve done better with a longer training camp.
Its like saying Shogun still should be ranked no 1 LHW over Jones because he was coming off a injury. You lose, your ranking drops.

Story was overrated IMO anyway. Look at his fights. Yes, he beat Alves....Fitch and GSP showed if you can LnP, you can beat him. Alves still would have KO'd story had the fight gone longer. Yes, he beat Johny, but I think Johny more or less lost the fight by waiting for Story to gas out which he didnt. Johny started super slow. But, he did win. Is a KO over a natural LW in Hazelett a huge win? What about his SPLIT dec win vs Jessie Lenox? Or his SPLIT dec win over Nic Osipcheck? (sp?)

+1 Styles make fights
Story was a bad matchup for Hazelett, Hendricks, and Alves stylistically.
Furthermore, CB was a bad matchup for Story.
MMA is one giant game of rock, paper, scissor unless your name is Anderson Silva
The UFC will give story a favorable matchup like Grant next

If anything it just proves Alves is overrated

Thats absolute crap, he is and always will be the #4 WW.
Always.
He has to be, because he's the one win that keeps Fitch from never being allowed to be surpassed.

I can live with that. I wouldn't be upset if they gave him Rumble or Penn. If they need to give him someone coming off a loss for politics sake, Lytle would be good. I just feel he still deserves a proven fighter rather than fall back to fighting up and comers like TUF guys or UFC rookies. If he loses again a similar way I'll change my tune.
