So you are driving, it is snowing, there is a layer of ice under the snow. You approach a pretty good hill.........How do you get up the hill? Gun it or take it slow...
Mind you, you have a car that is light in the rear, not stick and the hill is two way traffic.

I consider myself an expert in winter driving due to several jobs I've held in the past. I can pretty much guarantee you that I've put more hours behind the wheel in snowy conditions than most of you have in total.
The correct answer is put the car in low gear, and put as much gas into it as is necessary to get some forward momentum going. If taking it slow gets you up the hill, than take it slow. If gunning it works, then gun it. It's usually a combination of the two that works, but you'll need finely tuned skills (which I have in abundance) to know which is appropriate from second to second. Once you get moving forward, DO NOT STOP for any reason. If you stop, it's much harder to get moving again, as you have polished the ice under your tires. You also run the risk of sliding backwards down the hill, which sucks.
It's funny that this topic should come up today, because I actually had a situation like this last night. Got stuck on a hill spinning my tires in traffic. I am confident that I would have worked my way out of the situation if it wasn't for a few distractive factors. (yeah, I just made up a word. sweet.) A screaming, panicking wife is not an ideal companion during such trials, as concentration is key to success. One needs to completely focus on keeping the forward momentum going while skillfully dodging oncoming and passing traffic. Another key to my failure were the bald-*** tires that were just fine before you let your teenage son go Mario Andretting around town. Most people (and ALL women) would have died for sure if they had attempted this maneuver on such poorly treaded tires, but my skills were sufficient to the task. Despite these distractions, I was able to make steady forward progress while avoiding any sort of contact with the many obstacles in my way. Then someone stopped to push me, the wife bailed out of the car in a huff, and the hill was conquered. Great success!
I was told later that the reason for the situation was that my car was too light, that I need to put some sandbags in the trunk. Of course, it was a female that told me this, so you can understand the total nonsense of this statement. Putting sand bags in the trunk of a front wheel drive car with bald-*** tires would be certain death in any sort of challenging driving activity. Men know these things, women do not. Fact.

As you were gunning it, I recall the car going off to the side of the road. There was no forward moving momentum - just sideways moving momentum once we reached the climate of the hill!! You fail.

I mean did you stop to question why I was breathing like I was just gang rapped by a bunch of vultures when I got back into the car with you? :roll: Yes, the heavy breathing was from pushing you up the hill and over the speed bumps cause you don't know how to drive. That was clearly due to the aforementioned screaming wife/passenger distracting me from the precision driving maneuver that I was attempting to preform. If said screaming wife/passenger would have just STFU, as I so politely asked her to do, the sideways motion of the car would not have occurred. Duh!
I notice that you don't mention my skillful dodging of that tree during the sideways movement. Convenient of you to leave that part out.

And the reason we were the only auto stuck on the hill is because other driver's wifes/passengers STFU as told, I'm sure.

Put it in second gear, even if you have an automatic you will usually have a 1st or 2nd gear..Yes that's what the 1 and 2 means..
Keep driving and don't stop unless your are about to run into something. If behind someone follow in their tracks. If needed wiggle your steering wheel a bit to go at angles instead of straight up.
