It was a real estate associated transaction, and those are oftentimes big ticket, but he idioticly did it over the phone and outside of our systemic controls.

I had bet my boss he had to have some kind of an in on the other side of it, but apparently he didn't and he's just a complete idiot who somehow talked his way into a position he had no business bring in.

We've had plenty of people who had to enter into repayment plans with us to avoid prison because they directly benefited, this was the first really big ticket one where he was the victim. (Didn't prevent him from rightfully getting fired)
 
Well this is a bummer.

My wife gets a call about an hour ago from the husband of one of her friends. This is a mom in our cheer program, so my daughter is also pretty close with their family.

I guess the husband and his wife got into an argument about something (didn't specify) and she decided to down an entire bottle of pills (didn't specify which kind). He called 911 but I guess she ended up having a seizure before they could arrive. Any who, she got rushed to the ICU and has been in intensive care in an induced coma for the last 4 days. I guess she woke from the coma and got put in a lower level care room and gave the husband her blessing to let certain people know about it.

Really messed up... they've got 4 kids ranging from 8 to 18 and she's really never shown any signs of wanting to harm herself in the past.

I guess after she gets out of the hospital it's straight off to a psych facility until they can clear her.

Every day really is an adventure, never know what is going to happen.

Wife and I are debating on if we should let our daughter know about it. I'm thinking no... but, she talks often with one of their kids and I'm guessing she'll hear about it one way or another. I think I'll leave this one up to my wife to decide... she's way better friends with them than I am.

I would tell her but not lean into the potential suicide thing. Sometimes shit hits the fan in life and people lose it. Happens to the best of em.
 
So I'm pretty irritated right now with my daughter's school. It's just a local public middle school, but they do an unusual amount of class trips. Especially if you are in a club. My daughter is in band and 'advanced' choir. Just 2 weeks ago the choir took a 4 day trip to Boston. They had a performance on Saturday at some event there but they decided to go up on Thursday and spend 4 days and do Boston things. Not only was the trip several hundred dollars, my daughter spent a bunch too.

Now this Friday the band is going to Hershey Park. They have some kind of performance over at a school in Lancaster and afterwards they are all going to Hershey. $190. Next week the choir (again) is going to Dorney Park. Just for a trip. $150.

Now yesterday, my daughter comes home with this 3 page print out about their 8th grade class trip next year.... to Disney! A 6 day trip to Disney! W T F!! When did this become a thing?? It's $2,000 to send your kid and if you want to chaperone you have to pay for yourself too. This is an immediate no in my book, which I'm sure isn't going to go over very well. But fuck that. I'm against the whole concept of a public school even offering a trip this expensive that isn't even tied to a class or program. Mrrrr.

I've never even heard of a public school arranging a trip like that. That's crazy.

My 10 minutes to edit ran out, here's my amended reply (I had at first read it that the band was forcing everyone to pay 2 grand for a mandatory Diznee trip, that would have been insane)


The club/activity travel in and of itself isn't that unusual. The unusual part is the 'let's turn a Saturday afternoon performance in Boston into a 3-night, 4-day adventure!' aspect. That's very odd.

My daughters school goes out of their way to try to prevent staying overnight, because of the increased liability and need for additional chaperones/volunteers. I believe the only overnight event they have for orchestra (my daughter plays violin) is an 8th grade only trip to Springfield, but that's just one night.


As far as the 'class trip'... 6 days in Diznee seems a bit out there, but that really depends on the district and what kind of deal they cut with travel operator. For the sake of comparison, my daughters school used to do a school district sponsored 3 night trip to Washington DC... but after COVID they outsourced it to a 3rd party company and while the school will send an email blast out about it they are very clear that it's not an official school event and is completely optional. (my daughter does not attend it)

I'm guessing that the Diznee trip is entirely optional, occurs before the school year, and there wouldn't be any kind of punishment for not attending? If so, the school providing the trip as an optional event itself isn't that weird... the length and cost sounds a bit overboard though. I would definitely tell my daughter no dice on that (granted, she gets to to go to Orlando for cheerleading once every couple years anyways, so that would make it easy to veto the school trip)

The trip is in the middle of March. I don't know if it is their spring break week though... that could be possible. I don't think a public school needs to put this kind of pressure on parents even if the trip is just a voluntary option. Don't dangle a $2000 carrot in front of my kid!

And the Boston trip was her first extended trip away. They did the museums, aquarium, and watched some other performances while they were there. Not sure who decided to make it 4 days. But each day my daughter bought $50 of total crap wherever they were. I had to cut off her money at one point lol. I can only imagine how much she'd spend in Disney.

And I don't get how so many parents are available to chaperone for these trips too

Clubs in general have achieved the desired separation based upon money. I got a rude awakening a few years ago to the new landscape: club sport participation rules the roost in terms of college athletic recruiting. The high schools don't mean shit anymore, the owners and operators of the clubs have the connections to the recruiters. They make sure the recruiters are at all the big club tournaments, like the massive one my daughters played at in Reno a month ago. It's total bullshit.

High school athletics used to be the great leveler of the playing field. Everyone had the chance to give it a shot and let their talent tell the tale. Money and resources were far from first. That's gone. Unless you're an exceptional, 1 in a million talent, you better find a way to get into a club. My daughter's club is on the low end at $8k/ea per season. The high end club is $30k + travel expenses per season. Which one of those clubs do you think has a reputable college recruiter in the building at least once per week?

Things aren't like they were when we were growing up. My schools 'big class trip event' was a one night overnight trip to Springfield, by bus, to learn about Abe Lincoln... and we were in one of the highest cost most progressive districts.

My daughter is in a good, not excellent, district and they are pimpin out weekend trips to DC (flying, of course) with hotel stay.

On the plus side, it's generally a sign that you're in a good district. If the class trip was a bus ride to the box factory on the outskirts of town it's probably not as lux/prestigious.

Oh yea, we've talked about this at Junkie before. Youth sports are a whole new ballgame from when we were kids (80s/90s)

The grift is off the charts. Even mediocre athletes are traveling multiple times (at a cost of thousands of dollars to the parent, of course) across country every year with club teams, it's insane.

That's partially why I'm steering my daughter to the coaching side of it... scholarships would be great, but if she can get in on the coaching/gym ownership/event management side of said grift (which she has interest in doing)... cha-ching!

or, you know, you could just save that money and invest it (even in T bills) and have the money all saved up to send her to college and ruin her life.
 
The wife always wants to travel. (what is it with women and traveling, get back in the kitchen). Mom has gotten old enough she doesn't really want to go on trips by herself anymore (fair, she's 88 and still driving so........). So last year we drove around western Nebraska and saw the sights (yes yes, it's still funny, there are a few hidden gems though).
This year the wife wants to do it again.
Why? Ohhhhhhh let's go to the Black Hills. (which are super cool, I freely admit). Fine, we're going in May before insane tourist season starts.

So, I have to drive, prepare, make plans, what to see, get agreement and sit in the car and drive everywhere.
and what does the wife and mother do?????
sit on their phone THE ENTIRE FUCKING TIME we're driving through some unbelievable country. Hell I saw deer, mtn goat, coyote, woodchuck (had to look that one up, wasn't sure what that was), antelope, bunch of small shit. Ummmmmmm they saw some squirrels. and I'm doing all the driving.

If you are just going to sit on your goddam phone doing whatever, why do I have to drive all over hell at $5/gallon and $100/hotel room and shit?
