The Boxing thread

The IBF has now joined the WBC and WBA in permitting Oleksandr Usyk’s May 23 showcase bout with kickboxer Rico Verhoeven in Giza, Egypt.

The IBF granted Usyk an exception request but stipulated that if he loses, the IBF heavyweight title will be declared vacant immediately; if he wins, the WBC mandatory is next in rotation, followed by the WBA, with an IBF mandatory ordered 180 days later. The WBC had already sanctioned it as a voluntary WBC title defense, and the WBA confirmed it counts as an official defense for Usyk if he wins.

It's my understanding, the adherence to the rotation prevents the other belts from being held up with a rematch, or other showcase matches. The next in line stays the next in line without exception.

If there's a rematch it should be held in Gaza.

Ricco versus Usyk basically has little chance to win tonight but it would be crazy if he caught him with something insane and puts him away. He has a path to beat him and that’s to attack the body. Usyk has proven to be soft around that area, Dubois hurt him there, AJ in their second fight did as well and Fury, but HWs don’t seem to capitalise on it to set it up. This is why I think Kabayel is a tough fight for him cuz he’s an excellent body puncher and durable. If Ricco formulates a plan with his very good boxing coach in Peter Fury then you never know, but I suspect Usyk will play around with him early then take him out around the 4th/5th round.

What I said back home.

It did get me thinking about Rico and his clinch work. He's the bigger man, with a slight reach advantage. If he rides Usyk and make him carry his weight, (the discipline of the Ref will factor in here) his "chance" goes up. With his KB background, working the body and that "Liver" could pay off for him if he follows that gameplan.

Plus Rico's a very conditioned and disciplined fighter, if his camp comes up with the right blueprint you can guarantee he won't deviate from it across the entire match. I bring up blueprint, because Tyson Fury has been a staple in Rico's camp for years, and apparently had some success.

Sheeraz is a beast, he fights like Bivol and Canelo. The opponent was 29-0 with 23 stoppages and he made it look as though he was fighting an amateur. I don’t think Canelo takes this fight, if he’s ducking Benevidez I think he might duck Sheeraz too. Too high of a risk this kid is.

According to BLH the opponent was a can (at championship level)

"As disgraceful a matchup as it looked on paper, and shame on the WBO for sanctioning this as a world title fight. Begic, 39, was undefeated (he’s now 29-1-1), but it was all low-level boxing against fellow empty records. The WBO had him ranked No. 4 because of that record, and because in 2024, they put up the “WBO European title” for a fight that Begic — who promotes himself — had against a fighter who is also the brother of the man now listed on BoxRec as Begic’s manager/agent.

Begic had no business being in a fight at this level. You could see it in every movement he made in the ring. He was not anywhere close to belonging in the ring with Hamzah Sheeraz.

Sheeraz (23-0-1, 19 KO) is a talented, promising, and already quite good fighter who has real ability, but this was a paper title win. A body shot ended it, with Begic — who had kept his guard very high at all times — taking a knee and not beating the count."

The body shot would’ve ended a lot of Super MWs to be fair, evil liver shot. I even winced and thought no way he’s getting up from that. Sheeraz has many arrays of shots, in particular his left hook, perfect jab, high guard, solid chin, both uppercuts. Irrespective of his weak opponent, he’s ready for the top echelon of Super MWs, Canelo included.

Why the actual fuck did the referee stop that fight? Riccos been done dirty. If a refs going to jump in like that in every title fight from a knockdown then the sports fucking over. Unfuckingbelievable!

Let’s be realistic. The judges were gonna screw him anyway. They will do anything. Just believable. You can never say unbelievable in boxing

Probably but before the lockdown, Ricco was ahead. There was some close rounds that more than likely had to go to the champion. That’s just the way it’s always been unfortunately. Knockdown was bad, automatically giving Usyk a 10-8, but like Ricco just said in his interview, 5 seconds to go so let him go out on his shield or give him the chance to get to the 12th round, and go from there. From that performance, Ricco deserved to go all the way to the last round. Real soft stoppage in a title fight ffs.

Oh, and they’ve got the next contender ready. LOL
Al Sheik said he wants a rematch with Ricco in Holland, don’t be ridiculous! Dangerous fight for Usyk with very little reward other than money. Usyk knocked him out, that’s the end of that and I feel for Ricco, he did amazing. Kabayel was always the next contender for Usyk. Ricco should never have been an option for him, but money talks. These fights are dangerous cuz the element of surprise is there, just look at Francis v Fury, never should’ve happened.
