http://www.weeklystandard.com/stephen-colberts-show-is-failing/article/2002212
The New York Times
has a lengthy report about what's going on at
The Late Show
on CBS since Stephen Colbert took over for David Letterman nearly a year ago. The
Times's
write-up bends over backwards to put a brave face on it, but Colbert's show thus far has been a pretty big failure. ...
the other big mistake CBS made was assuming that the fact Colbert and Jon Stewart generated dedicated following among influential liberals would translate into a mass audience. On Comedy Central, Colbert had an audience of just over a million people a night. On Fox News, Bill O'Reilly—who Colbert was explicitly satirizing—averaged almost three times Colbert's audience. Yet, it seems nearly impossible to imagine a major network rolling the dice on giving a Fox News host a similarly high profile own show, even when their ability to draw eyeballs is demonstrably better....
...
Colbert may yet succeed. While Fallon was well-known before taking over
The Tonight Show
, Kimmel was also a marginal basic cable comedian who slowly built an audience; and he did it with much less fanfare and promotional support than Colbert seems to have received.
Still, it's remarkable that the media establishment is such a liberal echo chamber that they seem mystified by the fact that a guy who forged his career mocking the mores and politics of half the country has yet to become a broadly popular television personality.
During a recent conversation on here, I mentioned that I thought Colbert needed to recapture his liberal POV on his show as a way to help his ratings. My assumption being that his real audience was from liberals and they had expectations of him.
But this argument from the Weekly Standard is very convincing. The network late night show are essentially populist. People who want a good laugh and some fun interviews as they go to bed. And while Colbert is trying to deliver that, he has already turned off a good part of his potential audience. As the author mentioned, Colbert is talented enough to turn it around. But can he before it is too late?

I wouldn't say it has as much to do with liberal VS conservative audiences as it does with CBS VS Comedy Central audiences. Comedy Central has a unique 90-minute block, in which they make fun of the top political news stories from 11:00 to 12:00, and then after that is a fake game show in which comedians make fun of everything on the internet. That's an appealing and addictive block of late-night television, and the only thing that will get me to not watch that block (regardless of who hosts the shows) is if Jimmy Kimmel has somebody from a superhero movie on his show.
Good on CBS for bringing in a guy from Comedy Central, but just because you hired a Comedy Central guy, that doesn't mean I'm going to stop watching the channel that made him.

Americans are tired of the liberal garbage propaganda.
The cult leader Melissa "everything is racist" Harris Perry got canned off MSNBC .
If that article is true and Bozo O'Reilly is really getting 3 times his ratings (maybe they took the ratings from a show Trump was on so it looked big) than this clown is next.
Bye Bye

Thought it was a major mistake for Colbert to make this move to begin with. He was known for his character and had his niche at the right place. But for the most part he is now on a channel having to appeal to the same people he made fun of for so long. I mean people like trubs who like to act that their opinions carry more weight due to the moral superiority they feel that they have over others with different opinion. And that group does not have a sense of humor about ones moral superiority.
Colberts message was to narrow for the attempts of the big network.

I was hoping for Tina Fey. Yeah, she's pretty liberal and made fun of the Palin, but I just think her brand of smart and approachable charming would work.
There is also the reality that Fallon is bad *** good at what he does. He's incredibly charming, goofy but smart, and generally a pretty positive guy. A lot of what made Carson so popular but with a different style.

I have to give Fallon credit, could not stand him before he took over the show, but he definitely found his niche and is frigging amazing at it.

As much as I love Colbert, I always hoped this would fail so we could get the Colbert character back. That is what he is great at, not being the late night celeb schmoozer. The Colbert character was brilliant. He couldn't have done any better with that. But I guess Late Show money is tough to say no to.

7 years playing the same character 200 times a year is a lot too.

I'm not surprised that Colbert isn't working out. Didn't the same thing happen to Conan? Colbert and Conan both draw different audiences than Letterman and Leno did. Colbert has it even worse because he had to abandon a character that people loved, so what's the appeal?

Not now, they are talking about Colbert's Comedy Central show's numbers vs. what O'Reilly does on Fox News. A head to head comparison is quite misleading as Fox News has an ave audience that is several times that of Comedy Central. Colbert's audience was more than double the ave CC audience, whereas O'Reilly's ave is about 50% more than the Fox News ave. Both shows were very successful and were/are vital to the overall numbers/success of their networks.

O'Reilly has an average of what 3 million viewers? That is awful. I subscribe to prank channels on youtube that get more views. The guy is a nobody.
If this clown was getting one third of that when he was big, that is not very good news.
He had a very fringe, very small audience. To put that act on a larger scale expecting it to take off on a mass level was an obvious error.
If he was smart, he'd get Trump on a couple times a month to try to show some numbers.

A nightly news show vs a Youtube channel? Seriously?

I know sad, right?
I think they have the 70 to 80 year old demographic on fox news. The other night all I saw were catheter and depends commercials. That's who they have for sponsors at this point.
CNN is no better. They're both already dead they just don't know it yet.

No its sad that you think 3 million nightly viewers compares to a youtube prank channel. Do they get 3m viewers 5 nights a week on each of their videos?

I thought it would be obvious I was only making a point that they have no viewers.
Didn't know you were a O'Reilly fan sorry.

It is awesome. Fox pays him 18 million a year to do the show.
It is all about the loyalty of your audience and being part of the right demographics. Bill's audience is older which isn't a prime demographic, but they come back every night so a commercial message on his show has a good chance to penetrate. And then there is how much they can charge to run political ads on his show - mucho, mucho, money.

Somewhat. Conan got pulled too quickly IMO. He didn't get a fair shake. He's not doing amazing ratings at tbs, but with his key demo group that watches the show is apparently enough. Locked up to 2018. I expect eventually he will get a major late night spot. I still prefer him to all the others. Maybe the transition was too much at the time. Leno and Conan are polar opposites.
Jimmy has done well . I like him more now, compared to SNL, but still meh to me.
