I know most MMA and Muay Thai fighters perform the round kick with the shin, but I have watched some footage of karate or TKD practitioners landing the round kick with the ball of the foot (just underneath the toes). Do you guys think this type of kick is a. always a bad idea, b. a good idea only if you are wearing shoes (street fight), or c. always a good technique?

Always kick with the shin. A lot more power is generated with the shin than your foot.

I agree. One time I heard about this weird round kick watching a Don Wilson instructional video. Another was some point karate guy. I don't know why they like to perform the round kick with the ball of the foot, but I like to play with many martial arts techniques until I deem them not useful for my purposes.

Karate guys use the ball of the foot for board breaking, because it hurts less than the shin and looks better.

I tried this kick a few times on my heavy bag (with shoes on), felt like I could sprain my (kicking) ankle doing this one. Still waiting for someone to try it in an MMA fight.

That kick is generally thrown as a snap kick. You're not supposed to torque your whole body into it like a Muay Thai kick. It's fast and accurate.

A few guys at my gym throw that kick, it can be a menace if your not used to the angle it comes at.
Its not a bad idea at all you just have to get used to throwing it and find a place for in in your aresnal of attacks.

Are you allowed to do hook kicks (heel kicks)?

It depends on what position you are in. Sometimes the shin is not accessible. The shin is always the best method because there is more power and the bones are stronger in that area (kind of like the top of your head) but there are times it is impossible to get in a position where you can use the shin, so the foot is the option you have.

My answer would be b. good only when youre using shoes. you dont want to make a mistake and hurt your ankle.
