UFC Main event fighters who are then cut

The recent news (which was to be expected) of Dana saying Chuck will never fight for the UFC again got me thinking. How many times in the past year or so has the UFC sold us a main event with a fighter who was cut immediately afterwards? Liddell, Jardine (not technically the main event but it was sold as such until the week before the event), Coleman, Leites...anybody else?
How can the UFC sell us a fighter as being worthy of a main event if immediately afterwards they're not even worthy of fighting for the promotion any longer? Should guys who are one fight away from being cut be served up to fans as worthy of a main event?

When I think about it the way you are saying it, it makes me feel like these fighters have been used and then thrown away as if there is nnothing sufficient left to drain from them... :|

Chuck's deal isn't that he isn't good enough (skill wise). His body can't handle shots to the chin anymore.
Jardine, after 4 losses in a row. Its time for Jardine to take some time, get some fights to rebuild his confidence.
Leites, he spent a couple rounds butt-scooting around the cage.

Leites wasnt cut immediately after the loss to silva. he was then put on a prelim agianst sakara i think. if i remember rigbht it was sakara. and it was a very boring fight from leites again so he got the boot

Yeah that does make me feel like im being used. They should have given Kimbo another chance too. I think it should be 3 losses in a row or something but Kimbo lost once besides on TUF. What if Mitrome or however u spell it turns out to be pretty good now...

I don't think that's the case at all. I truly believe that in the instance of Chuck Dana has his
friends
best interests in mind. He admitted that he could still make money of CL and that it was money he didn't want. And for once I believe him.
Leites was a back flopper who deserved to be cut. Coleman shoula never been resigned in the first place.
Lutter was another fighter that went from main card to being cut. I think not making weight for a title fight had a lot to do with it. Gassing out against Jim Carey was the final straw and he also deserved to be cut.
There are instances of whatthefuck cuts, but the examples that have been given don't belong in that category IMO.

I'm not saying that the fighters didn't deserve to be cut. In almost every case I'd say they did. What I'm asking is why are fighters who are on the verge of being cut being given to us as main events? A guy on a 3 fight losing streak should be the main event? A guy who is 45 years old and hasn't been relevant in years is a main event fighter? A guy who has been KO'd in 4 of his last 5 fights should be the main event?
It would be one thing if this happened once in a blue moon but it seems to be happening fairly frequently. If Cro Cop had lost the UFC would have cut a main event AND co main event fighter from the same event. How can the UFC think these guys are worthy of us spending money but they're not worthy of being in the promotion?
Either these fighters are being given a raw deal or the fans are - they can't have it both ways.

I think the Kimbo thing is similar to the Chuck thing in that Kimbo knees are failing him. Chuck has more skills that Kimbo, but has developed a glass jaw, Kimbo has glass knees. It is sad to watch a fighter that is crippled in the cage, nobody wants to see that.

I see what you're saying and I agree.
However, do you think Chuck
wasn't
worthy of a main event slot? Do you think he deserves another fight?
IMO he was definitely worthy of being in the main event, but I don't think he should fight again. If he has to be cut to keep him from fighting in the UFC then so be it. I think Chuck's situation is a li'l different than most main event fighters that were cut. Most of them shouldn't have been in the main event anyways so I'd say it's the fans that are getting a raw deal in those cases.

You aren't looking at the circumstances around them though. There is always exceptions to the rules. Coleman for one was a former champion, and number two he was part of an MMA dream match over a decade in the making. Sure it may have been a few years to late, but dana still attempted at it. Coleman was also coming off a win against bonnar and even before that with a pretty decent showing against the now LHW champ rua.
And with Liddel, come on do I really need to go into why the guy got the ME spot? He is a legend in the sport. MMA grew to success in america with this guy. Even through his last fights have been less then stellar the guy has a cult following regardless of good or bad he is doing.

As far as being PPV worthy im not sure how you can discuss this, especially if you bought or watched the fights... you need to take into consideration the magnitude of the fights had they gone the other way... not so much with the jardine or coleman (UFC HOF vs UFC HOF), but if Lates had beaten Silva then people would still be talking about it, if chuck was on his way for another shot at the title it would be discussed over and over... keep in mind hind sight is always 20-20 so of course it can been seen like this now, but before the fights did it ever cross your mind "psssht the UFC is putting on fights lower class then they should be" i doubt it. Dana and Joe Silva do a good job of creating amazing fights for the fans, so they can continue to serve me up what ever it is they have decided to make...

Good Topic but I think most of the reasons these fighters are served as the main event is because we all know its a loser gets cut fight to begin with which draws a lot of views. So a better question is should a fight that consists of two people a fight away from getting cut be served as main event? Its all marketing, its usually two legends and people want to see who's on their way out and their way back.

I don't feel like me as a fan is getting a raw deal. I didn't care for the coleman v. Couture match up so I took option B... I didn't buy it. I did buy shogun/machida 2 though and I definitely will be buying lesnar/carwin. Don't forget you always have the choice.
The UFC puts on shows. They try to make up competitive matches and base it loosely on a ranking system. Its all about what sells ppv's. Not whether or not they will be cutting a fighter after a loss.
