He is not much bigger than Vitor. Rumble can still make 170 and vitor wouldn't make 170 even if his life depended on it. He use to fight at 205 amd 265.
I think rumble will be nothing special once he loses the size advantage, he is just another average wrestler with average striking.

I'd say that is a fair assessment, save Rumble will have a bit of a size advantage. He will be taller and just as thick, if not thicker than Belfort. He will also have a reach advantage. He is much younger, and more athletic. His power will be sufficient. He incorporates kicks. And his wrestling may be average, but it will be better than Belfort's. The ground, MAY be the only safe place for the Brazilian JiuJitsu Black Belt.

I wouldn't be shocked if Rumble took this...He's an athletic freak, highly explosive, and has enough power to end things quickly. Belfort still has the best hands in the division though....good test for both fighters

nope vitor has extremely overrated striking

Based on? He has one loss in like 5 years, and every fight is over in the first round. What more can the guy do then Ko his opponents in round 1. A Washed up Rich Franklin still went toe to toe with Henderson, Griffin, got his arm busted by Liddell. And only Anderson Silva had ever stopped him round 1. Pointing out that it Franklin's chin wasn't or isn't washed up.
If Belfort has overrated striking, then i'm not sure what Anthony Johnson brings, he didn't want to stand with Dan Hardy the only somewhat striker he's faced in years. And even if he just wanted a win, it's not as though Hardy is or has ever been a knock out machine.
I guess it's the battle of the super over rated, but i'll go with the guy who's at least fought prime Wandy, Liddells, Hendo's, 'Reems compared to Speers, Fioravanti, Yoshida's.

Rumble publicly said he fought hardy that way because it was just easier hardy is a solid striker but gsp exposed his ground game and lack of wrestling and johnson is a solid wrestler
rumble will be a good test for vitor
his strong wrestling base
size advantage
4 inch reach advantage
speed
athleticism
explosiveness
KO Power
his head kicks are brutal - dropped burns, hardy, charlie with head kicks

Obviously I am a big Vitor fan, but Rumble fighting a top ten middleweight for his first middleweight fight doesn't seem to wise, if you ask me.
I have Vitor KOing Rumble in the very first round. I know Rumble has good striking and long reach, but Vitor's speed will be far too great for Rumble to match.

Why is it not a wise decision? Do you have him as a top 10 WW? Rumble is a HUGE WW so I think he would do better at MW, he should be fighting at LHW IMO.

Really?? Anyone who can make 170 shouldn't be at LHW. I know he's big, but a lot of people seem to think he's bigger than he actually is.

I don't know but Vitor might be one of the most overrated fighters in the history of MMA. Does he have a chance? Of course...but this isn't 2003 and Rumble is far more dynamic with his striking (kicks/punches) and has a good wrestling base. Vitor is still pretty one-dimensional for 2011 MMA and has essentially lost to EVERY fighter with some decent wrestling/takedowns throughout his career. Of course I say that and Vitor could come out and run through him quick in round 1...that's usually the way it goes...but I think this will be a defining fight for Johnson at MW.

Yeah, he probably is a top ten WW, but he hasn't really beaten anyone in the top ten. The highest ranked fighter he fought was Kos, and we all know how that turned out. (I'd say he has improved from then though)
He probably will be better in at MW, but his size advantage won't be as significant as it was in the WW division.

If I knew nothing about MMA and you told me that Johnson was the guy who fought at the LOWEST weight out of those three guys, I would slap your momma for having you.
One of the biggest WTF pics I have seen lol.

Awesome fight.... But IMO Rumble would just try and TD Belfort instead of playing Vitors game.

Rumble ain't gonna try and stand with Vitor. He ain't that stupid and if he does it will look like a signature Belfort KO. I say Rumble tests his TDD and tries to take the fight to the mat and if he does we'll finally get to see where Vitor's BJJ is at. I'm pretty sure it's up to par though cause he's been a blackbelt for a long time. With all that said I see Vitor TKO'ing him in the first. Won't pick too many guys against him.

damn that's a hell of an opponent to get for your first fight moving up a weight class. what's weird though is it seems like AJ might be the bigger fighter.... vitor typically has a pretty significant speed advantage over most opponents, but AJ doesn't seem the least bit slow himself.

Might Koscheck and Johnson moving up be a pjsh by the UFC for new contenders? I guess if they were really in need they could just pull Rockhold. Still it would be hilarious if Sonnen got passed over by a noob.
