I bought AOE 2 right when it came out and it was buggy as FUCK. I had to wait a few years to come back to it.

I ain't touched it in 3 years, but it's on steam now, remastered with like 60 civs, and u can find on YouTube the last major tourney was played at the royal Albert hall. The game is too addictive.

Never seemed too buggy, although back when it first came out online it was a connection speed thing, if someone had a slow isp it would lag terribly, and the HD version on steam actually was buggy. Haven't tried the new DE version though
