WAR

Never seemed too buggy, although back when it first came out online it was a connection speed thing, if someone had a slow isp it would lag terribly, and the HD version on steam actually was buggy. Haven't tried the new DE version though
Depends on what you call buggy.
To me the pathing is the biggest bug the gaming world has ever seen xD
No idea, why units even have to group up, before moving, but this really gave me all the headaches.

I said mechanically. The way the interface operates, the balance of the units, etc... it's extremely well made. And the custom maps was where it was at.
I never tried c&c. But starcraft was legit a great game. Broodwar even better. Used to play alot of lost temple, big game hunters. Custom games like lurker blood I think it was called.

Mechanically, Starcraft is the greatest RTS ever made.
100%
Did not play SC1 because i did not have a computer as a kid.
But when SC2 came out, i could finally play that shit.
Went up to high master, before my hands did not want to keep up anymore.
I loved the asymmetric races. Watched it years later almost daily.

But ironically, because the races are so different, the game became stale.
Everytime a new map was designed, 2/3 players hated it, because one race was too good on it.
A new balance change? Everyone complained so hard, it almost was redone a few weeks later.
I am convinced my old build orders could still carry me to diamond without practice, because nothing changed since then.

In Aoe2 the problem doesn't excist. Everyone can play every Civ so the maps are always different.
Different game modes? No Problem. Team games? Hell yeah!
Aoe2 Esport is fun to watch.

For what it was at the time,

This is one of my favorite gaming experiences ever. Red Alert was amazing too.

I almost forgot about Warcraft 3. Another amazing RTS that is close to perfection.

I got SC1 back when it came out. Revolutionary at the time. I actually have very little time with SC2

most SC1/Broodwar players did not like SC2 IIRC.

SC2 seemed a bit more snowbally and therefore maybe a bit more luck dependant. (If you scout the wrong way, you see the all in too late for example)
But i could never compare, to me it was peak RTS

I've put more hours into the Civilization series than any other franchise.
I think I've played most of them up through Civ VI but didn't consider any of them to be even half as good as Alpha Centauri. It was way ahead of it's time. You can get it on GOG.com for $5.99. Steep learning curve but if you stick with it, you'll be hooked. I still play it a lot while listening to music. I can't just sit and listen to music and do nothing else so it's a great combination.

My flatmate bought it when it first came out and we would play head-to-head across the able by hooking up our laptops with a cable. Our hands would literally be shaking at crucial moments. I still remember the time I built my first nuke and nuked the city that held his nuke right before he nuked me. Unfortunately for me, he was ahead of me in knowledge of the game and responded with nerve gas copters that wiped out nearly all of my bases. Unfortunately for him, he didn't know that would trigger mind worm attacks because atrocity restrictions hadn't been lifted and the mind worms wiped out all of his bases before he could finish me. Good times. 🙂

Sid Meier's has the name but Brian Reynolds was the genius.

WIth all of my excessive hours I've dumped into Civ, I've actually never played Alpha Centauri. Always meant to, just never got around to it. I still haven't played 6 yet. I was waiting for it to be updated into a better product, just like with 5. 5 was questionable when it came out, but after all the patches and expansions, I consider it to be the best in the series. I used to think 4 was the best, but I do feel the one unit per tile is the way to go. So much more tactical thought involved rather than Stacks of Doom.

When I was a kid, I put in a ridiculous amount of hours into Civ2 on the PS1.

I'm glad you like it but Sid Meier's (really Bryan Reynolds) Alpha Centauri came out the same year and is way better.
Lmao I tried looking up alpha centauri pvp game footage, found none. Upon looking up the game, it's of course turn based. Noob shit. We both know that game doesn't compare to aoe2 lol cmon man.

It's two different experiences. Both are great games that give different experiences. RTS is more about click speed and reaction time, and Civ type games are far more cerebral.

Noob shit. LoL. That's not an intelligent statement.

I've dumped about 500 hours into Stellaris.

Love that game. Something about being the xenophobic Space Nazis and taking over the galaxy really does it for me. Full empire builder of a game, very granular, takes a long time,.but a lot of fun imo.
