Didn't really want to spend the money right now, but since the prices are getting jacked up to crazy highs after August 1st, I pulled the trigger on a new Xbox Series X. Got the disc drive model with the 1tb SSD for $649. I hate that that was a bargain price 😕

I know you're joking, but I've legitimately been trying to figure out where all this 'bullshit' money is coming from.

Bullshit being people being gifted large (to the person receiving it) amounts of money for seemingly no meaningful reason.



For example, years back my nephew tried to start a Twitch channel playing video games. It never took off, but there were a couple random times where he was playing Fortnite (on Twitch) and some one-off weirdo would come into his channel and 'tip' him hundreds of dollars for seemingly no reason.

I was always like, "okay and now you tell me the part where he asked you to take your shirt off, or, started fishing for personal information.... or, he wanted to 'hang out'... right?".

Nope... just some rando who popped into his channel and 'donated' $500.

He had this happen a couple of times ($100 here, $500 there), and it was different usernames/accounts... and they never returned or tried to make contact with him.


I was never able to figure it out. I don't know if these are drug cartels who are looking up the wrong username and dropping into the channel and making drug payments... or, if it's some Bitcoin millionaire that has more money than they know what to do with, and they are just dropping into random 15-20 year olds Twitch channels and 'making it rain' then disappearing into another channel to do the same thing there. Maybe it's a CIA thing where they are trying to target kids and give them small (to the CIA) amounts of money to keep them inside the house and gaming?

His theory is that these are other successful streamers who are 'paying it forward'... I don't really buy that, because he said he looked up the usernames and they were new'ish accounts.

It's not like MrBeast popped in and awarded him a million dollars and then did a video where he randomly picked 10 losers on Twitch and gave them life changing amounts of cash... it was always some weird username that didn't have much of a following dropping $100's for seemingly no reason and never looking to collect.

I wish I knew the answer, but it's fucking weird.



And to be clear, it doesn't make me mad or bother me, and I don't lose sleep over it... it's just confusing/doesn't make sense to me, and as all of you know I'm OCD about trying to unravel shit that confuses me.

I've chalked that one up to "who the fuck knows, but it's weird"

maybe it was a buy-in for a future request, and the donor did so with multiple people and determined someone else was a surer shot in the donor getting the return he was looking for. maybe the donor was a bad faith venture capitalist looking for the easiest mark to carry out his deed, but your nephew wasn't the bottom of the barrel he was looking for.

the best way to commit someone to your cause is to pay them.

That was my immediate thought... they were going to reach out to him down the road and be like, "hey remember all that cash I gave you? Time for you to do me a favor"

The fact that it's been years and no one has ever reached out though? That doesn't seem to be the case.


I had it narrowed down to the following:

1) My nephew is correct: and this was some kind of angel snowball/pay it forward thing where a successful streamer gave a less successful streamer $1,000 and said, "It's your lucky day! My only ask is that you pay at least half of this forward to at least 5 others that have lower audiences than you"... and than that person did as instructed and gave $100 to my nephew and ended the waterfall of payments.

2) Money laundering gone wrong: It was mistaken identity for illegal activities. Such as, cartel was suppose to give someone $500 for a job they did and the person breaking off the payment clicked on the wrong window and gave the payment to the wrong person (in this case, my nephew).

3) Dark money from the government/NGO:There's some weird NGO or possibly governmental agency that is making direct payments to young peoples accounts in hopes that they will continue to waste their time streaming, and maybe spread word of mouth like, "it happened to me, it could happen to you as well!" and get people to quit their minimum wage job and go the virtual begging route on Twitch or other streaming platforms.

4) Someone messing with him: One of my nephews friends was fucking with him/giving him false hope... but, if that was the case I would think they would have taken a 0 off the amount?


I dunno, but it is bizarre.

And to be clear (always have to be clear)... this isn't like Onlyfans where someone is providing something in exchange for money. I get how that works. I don't partake in it, but I understand it just like I understand dudes who like strip clubs (I'm not one of those dudes, but I get why someone would go that route even if I think it's stupid).

This is just weird because there is no service being provided... it's almost like virtual begging. You just click a button and people watch you sit in poverty and waste your life, and if someone feels sad enough for you they give you money for groceries? Where is the upside in that for the people giving the money? I guess if it was $1 here and there I could wrap my head around it.. but dropping $500 in a virtual beggars cup? What is going on there and where is this money coming from and how are these rich people coming to the conclusion that this is the best way to re-distribute money?

my thought on a future buy-in was more along the lines of enticement as opposed to a debt.

"Hey, remember me? I sent you $500 last year. Would you like to make $5,000?"

Yeah this shit is getting crazy. Luckily I've had my Series X for a while, and I just recently sold my PS5 right before they announced their price hike. So I guess I won't be getting another one for quite a while at this point. I've always had both an Xbox and a Playstation, but I don't play nearly as much as I used to so it gets hard to justify having both.

I never have time to play right now, so that made the purchase a little harder to swallow. But my Xbox One is pushing 11 years old and will likely crap out sometime in the near to moderate future, and I really did not want to pay $850 for a console. Plus I'm planning on forcing some gaming time when GTA 6 comes out. Sleep will be sacrificed.
 
I rented Astro Bot from the library and played thru it over the last couple weeks.

Really enjoyed it, the daughter would even take a few turns and enjoyed it as well.

It's on the easier side (a bit jarring going from Returnal bullet hell to this), but I like the way that they really utilize all aspects of the controller... but they don't get too outlandish or repetitive with the features.

If there's a gripe, it's that the story is kind of meh. You're not really playing for the story though, it's really about breezing thru the levels and having fun with the different mechanics they throw at you.


Not sure what I'll play next. Need to browse PS Plus and see what all has been released on there.

I played the free version of the one that came pre-loaded on the PS5. It was a good way to get familiar with the controller, which is what it was designed for.

Currently playing Clair Obscur 33. Finding it kind of hard to get into. A bit boring, with massive expository cut scenes all the time. Combat is overly complicated.

I qas the same with exp 33 at 1st. Combat finds a pace once you settle into it and the characters do get better
 
Decided to get the Resident Evil 0 Remaster and start from the beginning.

I actually started the series with RE2 back in the day, skipping 1 and never playing 0. I never played the two Revelations games either, but there are remasters/remakes of all 4 now, making the graphics somewhat bearable. Not sure how much fun it will be to revisit tank control player movement.... I'm gonna play through RE3, wait for Veronica remake, then continue through 9.

Guess that means I'll have to finally play 6 as well...😒
