So let's say GSP does beat Shields and vacates the ww title. Winner of Penn vs Fitch fight someone for the vacant title. Who would that person be?
Chris Lytle if he wins tomorrow?
Chris Lytle vs Penn or Fitch might be a good match but doesn't seem like a good ww title match.

So, coming into the UFC and going 1-1 would warrant Shields a second title shot???

I never get to say this...
TOURNAMENT!
No seriously, I don't think Dana would ever do a tournament.

You got me thinking now.
For a division that has always been thought of as stacked, things are suddenly looking very uninteresting. I think I've seen them all too many times!

I don't think you could give Shields another title shot if he loses this one coming up.

If GSP vacates the WW title then Diego Sanchez/Carlos Condit should fight (assuming neither loses before GSP vacates) with the winner facing the BJ Penn/Jon Fitch winner for the title. If either Condit or Sanchez loses then Chris Lytle should fill the losers slot.

I think a welterweight tournament would be the best possible scenario but I'm not sure if that would fly. If we don't see top welterweights getting put on post UFC 129 cards until the GSP/Shields fight goes down, then I think that means Dana is planning for a tournament.
Right now, Thiago Alves is the only one booked for a fight with Rick Story but that could easily change.

Because its not as stacked as everyone makes it out to be!
At least imo....

Simple, make it Penn vs Shields and Dana simply says "We were going to have a tournament, but since Kos and Fitch won't fight each other, I can't exactly put them in a tournament. Sorry guys, that's what happens when you won't fight each other."
Problem solved.

I think he would put them in opposite sides of the bracket. Or he would put them on the same side and say "deal with it" rather than just scrap the whole thing.

Dana has always said he is opposed to tournaments, but I've only ever heard him speaking specifically about one night tournaments. I think the only thing that makes sense is to do a tournament similar to what Strikeforce is doing with their heavyweights. All of the top contenders have lost to GSP, so it makes no sense for some of them to be ranked higher than others. Here is how I would have it:
Rankings after GSP leaves:
1.) Jon Fitch
2.) Jake Shields
3.) Josh Koscheck
4.) Thiago Alves
5.) BJ Penn
6.) Carlos Condit
7.) Martin Kampmann / Diego Sanchez Winner
8.) Brian Ebersole (I know I will get flamed for this, but the dude is on a 8 fight win streak, just beat Lytle who was getting close to being in the mix and is a fresh face)
Round 1:
Jon Fitch vs. Brian Ebersole
Jake Shields vs. Kampmann/Sanchez
Josh Koscheck vs. Carlos Condit
BJ Penn vs. Thiago Alves

Well Condit and Sanchez havent lost to GSP yet, but I do agree about Ebersole. I would rather see what he can do over a guy like Dan Hardy. Or maybe have the winner of Hardy/Johnson fight Ebersole for the 8th spot. hmmmm
BUt I also dont like having Shields or Kos in there. Both would have just got beat by GSP with no wins after the fight and both could possibly have been dominated.I would much rather see this.
Jon Fitch vs Ebersole
Penn vs Kim
Condit vs Alves/Story
Ellenberger vs Sanchez/Kampmann
