Heart and a good chin, confidence and a killer instinct are a few factors that are integral to be successful in MMA.

i think it's a delicate balance of all those things. in some areas you can come up short as long as you have other strengths. if you lack experience you can make up for it (maybe not entirely but to a point) by being prepared and physically ready. if you lack speed you can always make up for that by having excellent timing and a good game plan. that's why in my opinion the best fighters are usually well rounded and have alot of these things in their arsenal to use as they decide.

Determination can only take you so far, you need natural ability to go with it. We saw this in Penn vs Sanchez.

Resilience.... A trait many wrestlers have which I think is a big part of their success in MMA... Case in point Chael Sonnen vs Marquardt

The way I look at is is, what out of those qualities does amost or all the dominate champs have,
and that is either 1.speed 2.Stamina 3.Good camp.

God given abilities.
Some people are naturally just better than others. I mean, determination is great and all, but I could train 24/7/365 for the next 5 years, and still Usain Bolt would be significantly faster than me and would destroy me if we raced.
Just like Stephan Bonnar has been training in MMA for years now. He has had a ton of UFC fights and has constantly working to improve. Well Jon Jones is just that f---ing good and beat him badly. Bonnar will never ever ever never come close to getting the title. Jon Jones on the other hand has a very very good chance at doing so.

That's a good point, same with Chris Lytle, same with Kenny Florian but really... Sanchez will have a steady paycheque for quite some time and it doesn't have as much to do with the Ultimate Fighter anymore.
There are thousands of pro MMA fighters and really only a few champions by comparison. Everyone would like to be a champ, but i'd imagine everyone who's not a champ would be happy with a successful prolonged career.
