I know in the past, I have had my computer crash 2 times and realized Norton is crap at detecting just about anything. How in the world can you use this virus scanner and you pay good money for and it never detects a trojan?
Anyways,
So I finally started to do research and heard how good Kapersky was. Went to go purchase and I did not like the price for 100 dollars. Surely there was something much cheaper and just as good.
Well I now run Avast and I have a 3 month subscription(Free for everyone) that got rid of my trojan and it detects just about anything. Anyone else use this? I had my subscription run out and renewed it for free right away. Amazing program and its free.

^^ man ive had enough viral software over the years...
Stuff that causes havoc with your entire computer.... one virus would constantly shut the computer down and that was a b---- to get rid of.
I ended up using a program on a cd to get rid of it.

I was using Norton and it worked great, but far from free. Then found out Time Warner Cable offers free internet protection(Total packages) for free. It used to be Norton, so when my subscription ended, I went with TWC's free package. Well........ They have now changed to CA Security AKA P.O.S. Security, and it has been sucking so bad. I think I may give AVG a try, or go back to Norton.

You think Norton works well? I used them and they couldnt even detect the trojan that Avast got rid of within two minutes of scaning. I hear nothing but terrible things about Norton. Hmmm...

Avast or AVG definitely the leaders in the free space IMO.
As far as what I run:

Try ESET Nod32.. i have used norton, avast & avg. NOD32 is the best out of all of them in my opinion.
ESET on windows startup is very quick compared to avg & avast..that's one of the things i hated about Avast & AVG..

Macs still have vulnerabilities just like PCs (Although not nearly as many) and more and more there is malicious software being written to exploit these vulnerabilities. At this point you just need to download security updates to patch up the vulnerabilities. Eventually I could see Macs needing anti-virus programs.
I use Symantec which I get from work, I have used AVG and Avast!. I hated Avast! it didn't work for s---. But AVG is pretty great for being free.

Well, I've got degrees in computer engineering and computer science and have been working in technology for more than 15 years, so I'd hope so.
Free solutions are just fine for home use. You just have to make sure they're properly configured and set to constantly auto-update. I posted recommendations above for AVG or Avast.
The for-pay solutions are requisites for corporate environments where there is a lot more impact (risk) and where things like remote management and push-updates are absolute requirements.
