As a fan, i was pretty bummed with his Edgar fights, i thought he lost both decisively. I figured getting title holder money would be good motivation, but apparently it was Matt Hughes.
Who cares about matching up with Fitch or Shields, just cause, but who would motivate Penn to be pissed off?
He could keep moving up and fight Anderson Silva.

Nah him and Silva are friends from what I have seen. I know in his book he referred to a certain "punk" at AKA that used to come at him extra hard during sparring. But that guy is in Strikeforce.

He's friends with the Diaz's too, i believe.... :x
Those would be good fights too.
The only other guy at 170 i could think of that could trash talk him into a fight would be Koscheck... other than that, there's not a big enough name out there. I can't see Penn just fighting lesser knowns....

No clue to be honest, you would think fighting the number 1 contender in your weight division as champ would motivate you.

hey he fought Machida and he gave him a run for his money, to be honest a motivated BJ thats not a total out of reality to give Anderson some fits
I dont think Shields can beat him, I think Fitch can though via Fitch style.
BJ vs Fitch would be next since he doesnt have a dance partner

I'm pretty confident Penn wouldn't sign either of those fights. He seems like the kind of guy that's almost done with fighting and likely won't fight guys who aren't fan favourites.
I could be wrong though.
Let him gain a bit more weight and send him in against Wanderlei...

I really want to see BJ fight Maynard. Why? Because I want to see Maynard get worked.

Penn-Aoki would motivate him.
Penn- Sherk 2 maybe.
Penn- Maynard for the belt.
Penn-Edgar 3 for the belt if the UFC would allow it.

You would think being a champ would motivate you, but in his 2 previous fights it clearly didn't.
His pay had to have dropped a lot from champ to not champ as well. if he needed motivation then too, that didn't seem to work either.

That's what the people i watched with said, but i gotta say....
Penn looked like he was pissed off coming out to the fight. pissed off before the fight and knocked out Matt Hughes in :21 seconds... there weren't any moments in 10 rounds with Edgar where he seemed angry.

Edgar was the antidote of Penn. Edgar vs Maynard will be an interesting matchup.

CONDIT!!!
A striker, puts him one fight away from a WW title shot, Condit's not tied up at the moment. It's perfect!

I'm gonna catch some heat for this but I think St. Peirre vs BJ III would motivate him.
He(and some others) feels he won the first one and he knows his cardio was the major factor in the second. I could seen him really training hard and wanting to finish George early like he did Hughes.
I know it probably wont happen but just to answer the question with my personal opinion that's what I say.
