J-Lau is amazing. Technical crisp striking, decent wrestling, A+ jitz, killer instinct, exciting fighter, great cardio. The bonuses speak for themselves. Recently he's racked up wins against other contenders in Guillard and Former WEC champ Varner. But does he have what it takes to ever hold the 155 lb. Belt against guys like Edgar and Bendo.

I think you're overstating a few of his skills a bit, his striking is fairly wild, he just catches people with his insane pace in the first round or so.
His cardio, which would be a lot better if he had a different fight style, is far from what I'd call "great".
He is most definitely an extremely exciting and a solid fighter, but I don't think he'll ever get a shot.

Re: Will J-Lau remain a contender or will he ever hold the b
No. He will never be champ. We have seen how he performs against top level competition when he fought Florian, Sotiropolous and Pettis.
He gets finished every time he faces an elite fighter (and honestly GSot isn't an elite fighter).

maybe if aldo retired he could move down and take that belt but i just dont see it in the lightweight division its too stacked in my honest opinion.

He's not good enough to be a Champion.

He'll always be a contender.

I've always like Lauzon and I think he's an above average LW....but if that guy could make 145 - look out.

I don't think he will hold the belt, but his JJ is always a threat to anyone he faces

Re: Will J-Lau remain a contender or will he ever hold the b
Neither.
He is always going to be a game competitor. A top level one at that.
But he has never been a "legitimate" top 2 or 3 fighter in the division.
And their is nothing wrong with that either.

Re: Will J-Lau remain a contender or will he ever hold the b
Cardio isn't good enough, nor is his striking. Always a dangerous competitor though.

Re: Will J-Lau remain a contender or will he ever hold the b
I think Lauzon will usually be where he currently is. Extremely tough able competitor that always brings it and always tries to finish no matter what. But I don't think his skills are elite level enough to get him to the belt.

Re: Will J-Lau remain a contender or will he ever hold the b
Joe will never hold the belt unless his striking comes together, and his cardio improves. He is one of the best gatekeepers though.

Re: Will J-Lau remain a contender or will he ever hold the b
I thought he looked a lot better in this fight. Normally he pours it on in the first and is gassed after that; this fight, he looked great through all three rounds. If he can evolve his game a little more, I think he has a shot.

Re: Will J-Lau remain a contender or will he ever hold the b
Well Nate Diaz is right on the cusp of getting a title shot and he's got 5 UFC losses. So if Joe Lauzon were to win the right couple of fights next he could fight for a title. But he needs to win against two really top guys.

Well I think the main reason he looked so good later in the fight is because Varner had gassed as well.
Now, I'm not trying to take away from Lauzon's performance, he was a big reason why Varner gassed, but I do think it's a hole Joe would need to fill if he wanted to win a belt.
