Here's a quick rundown of the details, in case you want the too long, didn't read, version.
• No more always online requirement
• The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
• All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360

• No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs

Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.
For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.
Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.
You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.
So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games
– After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today
– There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.
In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.
These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.
We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.
Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year.
There's still a rather large price gap between the two consoles, with the Xbox One running $499 USD and the PS4 coming in at $399, but today's announcement would seemingly even out some of the major differences the gaming community cited during E3, and the weeks leading up to it.

They must have been getting slammed in the pre sales to make this kind of change.
Lots of users still concerned with having to have the Kinect always on, videoing and recording you.

Not to mention they have now eliminated the ability to share downloaded games with your "family".

I'm sticking with PS4, for the fact that they were planning on giving us all these option's the Xbox wasn't going to before as it is.
Not a big fan of having to pay to play online either.

i will continue to choose Sony's systems until Microsoft puts out a reasonable controller and offers XBox Live for free.

Unfortunately that will be a reality for both systems, you have to be a member of Playstation + to play online with the ps4.

^^^ Like he said, PS4 owners will now have to be a Playstion Plus member (subscription fee) to play games online.
As far as the actual article goes...
It's a smart move my Microsoft in the long run, but ridiculous that they even had any of this stuff period. On top of the where the price points are at as well, I think this gen is Sony's to lose.

I don't have it, but I've heard very good things from the people who do. I doubt the perks will be quite as good now that just about everyone will need it, but ya never know.

what do you mean reasonable controller? I have always preferred the Xbox controller over the PlayStation. More comfortable of a feel and better layout.

I also have PS+ and it is great. I got it a few months ago and have been pretty impressed with the games they put out for free.

I'm already a PS+ member, so it shouldn't be a problem. I don't like the idea at all but there's not much I can do. Also have had plenty of shitty experiences from Xbox360. Wouldn't be sad if Microsoft went under.

i think the controller argument is entirely a matter of personal taste (except no one likes the Wii controller). I would say the same words as you verbatim in explaining why i like PS over Xbox in terms of controller.
for me, the xbox controller might just be too big and the staggering of the two joysticks is counter intuitive to me. It's harder for me to use the D-Pad (which is usually still assigned functions outside of player movement) while also rocking the joystick.

why would they do that when the market resoundingly rejected their original ideas?

Because it is not about having balls, it is about making money. And if nobody wants to buy it, kind of hard to make any money.

this is obvious but they didn't just announce this blind. They are a giant corporation and i'm sure they had focus groups, live testing, surveys, and years into that idea. So they should have expected the backlash and been prepared for it

Xbox really dropped the ball on this new console... A massive massive failure from a public relations stand point. So much so that they had to bow to consumer pressure and change their own restrictive policies or face being crushed by their competitors.
