My oldest has taken to calling me "Bruh". So now I call her "Dude" every time she says it, regardless of interrupting her, and she looks at me funny as if I am using "Dude" incorrectly. At some point I hope she tells me, so I can tell her in many, many words how I am not her "Bruh".

There is a lot of conversation happening within numerous communities about a series of death investigations in the city suburbs where people are found in a retention pond, lake, river or some other body of water.
Just in 2026, NBC Chicago journalists have spoken to police about at least 11 death investigations,from Elk Grove Village to Aurora, Schaumburg and even in downtown Chicago.
The latest such incident unfolded Monday, when a "suspicious person" was found in a body of water in suburban Palatine. Illinois State Police now believe that officers were trying to stop a man who matched the description of a "suspicious person" just after 6 a.m. Monday when he entered the water.
He didn't resurface,and was pulled from the water later in the morning.
While Monday's incident was just the latest, NBC Chicago reached out to numerous law enforcement agencies to address the social media rumors and discussions surrounding the deaths.
Chris Covelli, Deputy Chief and Public Information Officer for the Lake County Sheriff's Office and Lake County Major Crimes Task Force said this, in response to our questions: "No knowledge or recent investigations we’re actively working that appear to be a serial killer.We always encourage the community to go to law enforcement when they have questions about community safety or any active investigations.Social media is filled with rumor, speculation, and innuendo.If the community has a question, they can contact their local law enforcement 24/7."
We also reached out to the FBI, the entity that would handle a large-scale and high-profile investigation if local departments called for help or if the crime reached the federal level. They cannot deny or confirm any investigations at this time.

We are falling victim to the "investor" machine where we are moving. I've read about investors and corporations swooping in and out pricing middle America oit of the housing market, but I didn't realize its happening here...D'OH!
We've bid on 3 houses and "investors " beat us out with higher bids. We had to pull out of 2 townhomes because the HOAs were about to be raised. UGH.
We put a bid on a house today, essentially for asking.
Before everyone jumps in, realize, this is the area we want to live. Our kids will go to school here and our jobs are here. We don't have much of an option for our price range.

I had a similar problem with Airbnb buyers here. There is a huge rush to create more Airbnbs and they are buying up all of the properties. I looked at a bunch of places that were clearly former short term rentals.

Yea...same kind of issue here. 30mins from Disney, Universal, SeaWorld. 1hr away from the beach. Lot of investors want to rent those out.

That's unfortunately pretty much anywhere that isn't a complete shithole
Normal 2-3 bedroom 2000 sq ft homes out here are going for $500,000-600,000 and then you have $12,000-18,000 a year in property taxes.
Despite this, nothing stays on the market more than a week or so.
That's definitely one way an HOA can actually come in handy, by keeping that shit out of the neighborhood.

Airbnb contracts out here have no-party clauses that nobody adheres to. They'll define how many people constitutes a party, what decibal level constitutes excessive noise (like anyone has a damn decibal meter), state that the property has exterior cameras that are monitored for security, and define the penalty as loss of their deposit.
Yeah OK...
Anyone throwing a rager on top of a hill overlooking the golden gate bridge in Sausalito just gonna factor that loss of deposit as the cost of doing business (their party).

AirBnB is slowly going away here near Clearwater Beach. The property market go SO crazy on short term rentals in 21-22 from the crazy vacation years that they no longer cash flow at 7% interest on an $800k one bedroom condo with $1k a month HOA, and you are seeing people that want to cash out their equity from the run up selling for a good return for them for holding for 3-4 years, but not the "real estate experts" value.
The people who are still making money are the 3-4 bedroom home buyers, but many nearby towns are outlawing less than monthly rentals.

there's been a pretty immense ecosystem that supports the Airbnbs. like it's own little RE subculture complete with shell companies, mass investment, global marketing, and even options to buy-in if you like the place you stayed at.

Almost all now have really bad stories where they created funds to build empires and screwed their investors because when money went to 9% for commercial paper, the investors take a bath, but funnily the managers still hold the property.
