Triple M Junkie Idol Game thread

THIS WAS A SHAM TRIAL WHERE EVIDENCE WAS COMPLETELY IGNORED BY TWO OF THE JUDGES:

1) it was not an 11 fight WINNING streak. It was an UNBEATEN streak. Because Lenny fucking gouged out Blah's eyeball (looking at you @cmvideo75)

2) just because Lenny won doesn't mean he deserved to be there! That's like saying Jamahal Hill deserves his title shot because he won it. Just like Lenny, he is clearly not championship material (looking at you @Webble )

3) I was judged on whether people "cared" about my argument?! And my argument DID NOT solely rely on shitting on five other washed up/puffed up LWs! I gave an alternative name and what the matchup should have been. Clearly @cmvideo75 has taken rhinos throne of "king of not reading this shit or doing my job."

4) BLATANT AND BIASED HOMERISM FROM ONE OF THE SUPPOSEDLY IMPARTIAL JUDGES!!! (That's you @Webble!!!!)

Shame. Shameful. This is the type of judging malfeasance that led to us getting fucking Tito as a champion smdh...

I would never have dared if I had known it was yours you're far too fierce :p
"My unpopular opinion: Leon Edwards and his whiny, bitch-ass diva-ness are responsible for the current impacted colon of a division we all must suffer with. HE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN IN THAT SECOND USMAN FIGHT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!"

Yeah it's a complete mistery who could have written that..

I thought judges were supposed to judge the arguement not the topic? Also, @thedarkwingduck2k11 said duplicate topics were allowed
Reading the criteria closely is vital to this game; it was clearly stated that the topic was very important (is it unpopular? Is it relevant?). You'll need to pay closer attention if you want to advance in the knockout stages.

You have no say in this anymore, as an official dicktucker. You've joined a list of half-dozen or so that will carry that stain on their reputations for the rest of their days here. The time it took you to write this up, you could have easily used for your next entry.

1) time doesn't work like that. I can't SCHEDULE a fight with my lady every Friday evening where she storms out, leaving me with a couple unexpected free hours.

2) It took me like, 45 minutes. Many moons ago, at the old old place, I wrote a fanpost on this exact subject. I recycled several pieces from that for this. The Piffle piece I WANTED to do would have taken at least four hours to compile. I do not have that time sadly

3) you were my favorite judge this time (@Webble took herself out of that spot). I don't even think I had to take one shot at you. I'd prefer not to start now.

I would also like to point out that this is now two (2) Idols that I have saved @Eranys scrawny butt.

The infamous Archimedes Idol where I had to fight with Ulf to let him back in, and now.

The UFC should have kept Mike Goldberg in the booth

In the era of analytics, the UFC's versatile mix of cage-side commentary teams offers the very best analysts in the world of MMA today. But in December of 2016, the UFC said goodbye to longtime play-by-play commentator Mike Goldberg

From 1997 until the end of 2016, Goldberg called the action inside the cage, read the advertisements, and guided the overall pacing of the show alongside color commentator Joe Rogan.

Goldberg was responsible for such iconic catch phrases as..
"Virtually Identical"
"Here We Go!"
"It's all over!"
and the iconic
"Just Like That!!!
"
Some of these you can still hear John Anik say while doing commentary on current shows.

But in July 2016, WME-IMG acquired the UFC and decided to approach the commentary booth in a more analytical direction, thus ending Mike Goldberg's 19-year run as the voice of the UFC's live shows.

Now, looking back over the last decade at the desk, I think there was a missed opportunity in that decision and that it was a mistake to release "Goldie."

While it's hard to argue that the current stable of UFC commentators and analysts aren't collectively the best in the world, there is a missing "Everyman" dynamic that "Goldie" would have filled perfectly over the years. Granted, Goldberg was never the most technical or versed MMA announcer, but it's his mixed martial arts "greenness" that would open the door for the color analysts to explain and extrapolate.

And while many of us have grown to identify more with the analyst side of the table, there are still a lot of casual, new fans that would identify with a commentator like Goldberg and the novice role he could have played on the panel. Not to mention, Mike's lack of in-depth knowledge was often the segue for Rogan's own, more technical commentary.

That dynamic often led to some comedic, eye-rolling moments from the more schooled Rogan.

Had the UFC decided to re-sign Goldberg in 2017 and gave him the opportunity to grow with the sport—somewhat mirroring some of our own growth as fans—I think he could have become a beloved foil for witty analysts like Bisping, DC, and Sanko. While at the same time growing into a valuable asset to the company's overall brand.
webble: I don’t agree with this one sorry, I feel the sport moved on in technicality and it was time for commentators to move on with it. I do agree they could have treated him better with a goodbye and thank you but I think he was out grown sorry. I’ve also seen more recent interviews with him and he came across as a bit odd 3/10
GoodCat: I like that this is a completely original topic from the usual "Fedor wasn't actually any good" type of arguments. I've always agreed with the point you made about Goldberg acting as the casual fan to set up Rogan or Florian, Dan Hardy, etc to break things down. I think for the more hardcore fans like us, we kind of looked at it like he didn't belong since he acted like he had no clue about what he was seeing or talking about (calling Travis Lutter the Michael Jordan of BJJ). And while I don't think he is/was anywhere near as knowledgeable as Jon Anik, I do think Goldie played up the clueless guy a bit to let Rogan and the others talk more often. There are times currently when I wish Anik would stop talking and let DC or Bisping further breakdown what we're seeing. A play by play guy who knows too much is not a good thing, IMO. Only the rare guy like "The Voice" Michael Schiavello or Mauro Renallo can get away with it. And in The Voice's case, he typically does it all by himself because he is such a freak of nature at what he does. I like this pick a lot, and agree with it as well. 9/10
Brick:
This must be the least “unpopular take” yet. I remember a fair amount of disappointment if not outrage from fans when Goldberg was removed; us OGs all liked his catch-phrases and energy, and as you describe Rogan was always on hand for the technical stuff. Especially they way he was disrespectfully dumped by the FNG owners. I think your unpopular take was actual the majority take so you fail in that regard. For this competition, you really need to bring a risky hot take, but this one probably had most if not all of the judges saying “well, duh.” 2.5/10
cmvideo75:
I like this one because I agree with it lol. But I don't know how popular the anti-Goldberg opinion was among MMA fans. I think many MMA fans used to like him or were just indifferent. His voice was the identity for a long stretch of UFC fights, even if he wasn't the most eloquent guy. He was entertaining and presented the everyman vibe like the write up says. So I agree with this unpopular opinion but I debate just how popular the popular opinion actually is. I don't remember a big 'Goldberg must go' push or anything like that. 6/10

PEDs should be legal in MMA

Ever since the beginning of competitive sports, humans have been trying to get an edge on their competitors .
From ancient Greeks stuffing themselves with meat which isn't your typical Greek diet to experimenting with herbal medications
all to enhance their performances.
Early Olympic competitors ate magic mushrooms, herb mixes, and raw animal organs like testicles or hearts to enhance strength and endurance. Gladiators from ancient Rome used tonics to prolong fighting endurance. In the 19th Century competitors experimented with combinations of alcohol, heroin and cocaine to fight off fatigue.

It's human nature to cheat in competitive sports. Now, when you're going to be in a cage where you're in a dangerous fight with risks of serious life long injuries (or worse), the urge to cheat increases.

How often would a fighter go through a camp without picking up an injury even a small niggling one? The fear of going into a fight hampered and feeling your opponent has an advantage over your injury. Also, the fear of missing weight because you can't "run the roads". Add in another fear... the financial side.
The further up the rankings you go, the more money you make. Every fighter wants that spot and very few are willing to get there cleanly IMO

We have seen fighters go on some incredible runs, even some fighters have a big resurgence in their careers. Vitor Belfort being a prime example. 99/100 of those have been down to the use of some sort of enhancement.

Is it fair? Fuck no
Is it entertaining to watch? Fuck yeah

But you can argue the fairness outweighs the entertainment. So, why not even the odds? Why not let fighters legally take Peds?

Have both fighters be the best they can be. Have them using the same levels of peds administrated by UFC doctors (or whatever org they compete in)
They should be tested weekly or within a time frame that they can't exceed allowed levels and drop back down. The should have expected levels when tested if possible. Doctors can tell if the have fiddled in anything extra or if they have masked anything

The Benefits
Recovery time will be accelerated.
Peds would reduce the damage to muscles while training or working out. Fighters would be able to work out more intensively. Crafting their skills at a much higher level. They would have enhanced oxygen intake from increased red blood production (this will boost the bloods ability to carry oxygen which would fuel energy delaying tiredness or fatigue)

Injuries healing much faster meaning faster turnarounds and fighters fighting more often which would mean more money for fighters.
The more money they make, the earlier they can retire and with luck they retire healthy. Fighting for longer increases the chances to have life long injuries. How many fighters have we watched in their old age deteriorate? Sounding punch drunk as they fought on for too long?

Another benefit is weight cutting. Fighters can maintain weight a lot better and won't need to make drastic cuts. Big cuts are a risk to organs and have even resulted in deaths. Fighters can use hormonal androgen receptors to maintain muscle while losing fat. A new rule can be introduced that fighters are weighed when receiving the treatment from UFC doctors. They will be assigned a weight class judged on this and won't be allowed to be over a determined weight weeks out from the fight.

There is a health risk for fighters taking peds but this risk would be reduced if they were to be receiving them from medical professionals. Fighters main concern now is to mask what they have taken so they don't fail a drug test and receive a ban. If the peds were allowed then they would be tested for everything by a professional which would minimize health concerns.

Overall we get the best out of the best fighters which would lead to much more entertaining high level fights and that's what we would like to see

webble: I’m not sure how this topic got duplicated but my thoughts are the same as for entry no 1 . This entry maybe had a slightly better argument mentioning weight cutting but my verdict is still no 4/10
GoodCat:
Not quite sure how the same topic was allowed to be submitted, but it's all good on my end. I can't really say anything different in scoring this one than I did on the first one. But I am still completely on board with PEDs. I like how you mentioned the fans just wanting to be entertained as part of the reason, whereas the other one didn't. Not really much else to say about it. And since I gave the other one a 10, I can't justify giving this any other score either. 10/10
Brick:
I won’t repeat myself, but I have the same thoughts as the other PED entry, that this would be disastrous for the sport and would turn UFC and MMA back into a pariah, after having come so far. The one outlier sport allowing this dangerous and sometimes fatal activity? No thanks. Roughly the same score, but I think the other write-up on this topic was slightly better, so 3.5/10.
cmvideo75:
I'm gonna score this the same as the other PED argument. They are pretty similar. I think this one was going a bit better but I kind of disagree with the ending that having professional doctors involved in the distribution would help the safety of the product. I think people would still abuse it far beyond what the doctor is suggesting just like any other narcotic you can get from a doctor. But I'm down with the opinion because for me this is entertainment and some of the most entertaining fights and fighters have been PED abusers. So I'd be a hypocrite to say I was morally against it when I enjoy the shit out of their fights.7/10

Khabib is not top 5.
Let’s be honest folks, If you look past the "29-0" hype, Khabib’s actual UFC run is kind of mid compared to the real legends.
Half of his 29-0 record happened before he was even in the UFC, fighting random guys over in Europe, who probably worked full-time jobs. Then he gets to the UFC, goes 13-0, but look at who he actually fought. His early UFC run was stuffed with unranked dudes or mid-tier gatekeepers, not a murderers row like some of the other GOATS.
For me, the biggest knock on Khabib is that he only defended his belt 3 times, that’s it. He won a vacant belt against Al Iaquinta (what a monster), who was ranked #11 and took the fight on a day's notice, and then he beat Conor, Dustin, and Gaethje and dipped. It’s easy to stay undefeated when you leave the sport the second you hit the actual top of the mountain.

Compare that to the actual GOATs who stayed at the top for years and defended their belts against way harder, constantly evolving competition. Lets do the list.

The Actual GOAT, Jon Jones: Has 15 or 16 title fight wins. He cleared out an absolute shark tank of light heavyweights, beating multiple generations of Hall of Famers, and then went up and won the Heavyweight belt. Guys like DC, Machida, Shogun, Rampage, G-LOVER, Belfort, Stipe,Gane, etc.
Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson(not my favorite, but…). He had 11 consecutive title defenses. He didn't just hold the belt, he completely cleaned out an entire division for years.
Anderson Silva (nuff said). He defended his belt 10 times in a row, completely embarrassing elite contenders in their prime with highlight reel knockouts.
Georges St-Pierre (2nd FAV): 9 consecutive title defenses in a Welterweight division that was a total meat grinder, fighting elite wrestlers and strikers back-to-back.
José Aldo had 7 UFC title defenses (and 9 total if you count WEC) at Featherweight, ruling that division for an entire decade against absolute killers.

Three defenses is just not enough to be the greatest ever. I mean current champs like Islam Makhachev have already matched Khabib's three defenses and are looking at a much harder schedule. Khabib was a dominant force, but his “run” is way too short, and he retired way too early to be in the same conversation as guys who defended their belts double-digit times. That is my unpopular opinion.

webble: I haven’t heard this argument before so go ahead I’ll listen. I think the title needs expanding to add of all time to make it a little clearer and the poster makes that argument pretty well, I thinkKhabib is good but don’t really have too much counter to the opinion or well made points 9/10
GoodCat:
Good argument, good job giving us alternative guys who should be ranked top 5 instead as well. A lot of times people will bring up a point on why something shouldn't be this or that, but not give any alternatives on who should be that instead. I kind of relate Khabib to Ricky Hatton in boxing. Dude was undefeated but fought tomato cans basically his entire career. When it comes to individual sports, I don't think being undefeated means nearly as much as it does in a team sport. Like another submission mentioned when talking about HOF level, it's more about who you have fought and your level of competition that makes you a GOAT. 8/10
Brick:
I like it. Especially with recency bias, you probably would hear Khabib on quite a few top 5 lists. 29-0, didn’t lose many rounds, didn’t seem to ever get busted up, three title defenses in convincing fashion. But you make a good argument; picking up your ball and going home so soon is kind of weaksauce and definitely makes your case much harder to make for top GOAT status, compared to some of these other guys with massive runs. I think your argument would have been even stronger had you not limited yourself to UFC and went full MMA GOAT, you could have potentially moved another name or two (at least a certain Russian machine) ahead of him for GOAT status. But good argument overall; 9/10.
cmvideo75:
This is my winner for this round for sure. I agree with this and I don't think a lot of people would. Many people put him as the GOAT, let alone top 5. But I am a big fan of the long title runs and guys that stick around and keep fighting past their prime and still had success. Khabib is the Kurt Cobain of MMA. Hit his peak and then he was out so he gets legendary status. 29-0 is tough to argue against but 3 title defense is kind of weak to be arguing him against the likes of Jones, GSP, Spider, and some others. So I think he was on track to be top 5 and definitely one of the more dominant fighters in MMA but I would have liked to have seen more of it. That keeps him from top 5 for me. Not to mention a lot of his wins were pretty damn boring.10/10
