I remember even in university exams when calculator was allowed I was nervous enough to do very stupid calculations with it (and eventually graduated the top university with honors)
 
That's super complicated. I was taught the old way but we put the numbers carried at the bottom
We only did it the old way in school. I had never seen this until just now. And it makes me glad we're homeschooling our daughters.

I'm sure it makes sense if you were taught that way, but carried numbers on the bottom seems as odd to me as using commas for decimals.
 
kind of. it's ass backwards for me. I got in trouble twice, when each of my daughters were in like 4th grade for teaching them long division. they didn't teach the way we all learned until the next year. for the first year they wanted them to learn some weird way to approach it so they understand how the step by step formula works or something. but the next fuckin year they abandon that for the way we were taught.

didn't, and doesn't, make sense to me. it's procedural. Life is full of processes and procedures, I don't need to know how each step works when the guaranteed result of following those steps is accuracy.
It's just so overly complicated. You're achieving the same thing in a far more roundabout way. I just can't see the advantage. If a kid is inherently bad at math, then making it more complicated is not helping them nor preparing them for higher level mathematics. I have no proof, but this feels like an offshoot of the "math is racist" doctrine.

ya the whole teaching style for some of it left me going What the fucking fuck... So I'd come behind the school, show my kids the way I learned, and that made more sense to them than this new way. Why make them learn something you're going to have them unlearn just a year later? One of my kids teachers said to think of it like training wheels, and next year the training wheels come off.

WAT?!?!?! Damn lady you're throwing idioms at me, there's merely conspiracy level commonalities between those 2. There's no need for training wheels when this bike is hop on, pedal, and go.

Having seen this process play out 3 times now, I think the fundamental difference in teaching styles between our and their generations is "the why". Seems like they want them to know why each one of these steps works on its own. Our generation focussed on "the how". Follow these steps in this order and you will get the same, correct answer every time. If you don't, there's a mistake somewhere, go back and find it.

I'm sure there's some kind of value in knowing why to everything. But I'm kind of on a need to know basis, there's a lot of information out there, and a lot of it... I just don't need to know. The key to learing math, for me, is repetition. Using our repetition tool on a process that will be abandoned forever is flat out stupid and a waste of time.
 
I need a place to rant.

This past Friday night, the wife was having a girls' night, so I met her to pickup my son. He has been begging to go to Waffle House for a solid month, and we just were never in a spot where it worked out. So I figured that's what I would do for him on Friday. We have "our" Waffle House that is newer and cleaner, and we've never had any issues at all. But it was gonna be way out of the way for me coming from work, so we went to a closer one. There were only 2 other couples in there eating, and 3 total employees. Two waitresses and one cook, and that's it. It was quiet, so far so good. About 5 minutes in, one of the couples gets up, and I notice that they are nasty ass, meth head looking people. There were probably 5 teeth in their mouths between them.

The guy walks up to the register and just yells out "I must have missed the new policy that states you only get 1 cup of coffee and no refills!" And their waitress turns around and is like "I'm very sorry, this is literally my first day here and you guys were my first ever customers." and this dude's wife or mother, she honestly could have been 30 years old or 70 years old says "I don't give a fuck! If you can't do a better job than that, then maybe you should just quit!"

Now the cook turns around and gets involved and was trying to explain that they have no formal training or anything before someone starts work, they just kinda throw them in the fire and they have to learn as they go. And then the meth woman screams at him about how their food was nasty and they didn't get the right food and all this. The waitress walks over to their table and is like "well you never said anything about the food at all, and both of your plates are completely empty. And you also both have 3/4 of your coffee in your cup"

That obviously pissed them off even more, so the dude said they weren't paying for their food until they talked to the manager. The cook said he was the acting manager and that the store manager was coming in at 9 that night. They said they were gonna wait, this was at like 7 or so. The cook told them he'd call the police and to "get the fuck out of my store"

So here is where my personal rant comes into place. Thru all this yelling and screaming between all of them, it scared the crap out of my son so he's bawling his eyes out. But for some reason our waitress decided to point out to said meth heads that they were scaring the little kid, and why did they have to scream and use language like that with a little kid present. And I'm just sitting here thinking "leave me out of this, why are you bringing me and my son into it?"

But any way, now the lady starts in looking over at us and saying "why are yall bringing them into this?" which, while I agree with it, I didn't want either of them paying any attention to me or my son. Her guy had walked out of the restaurant but then walked back in while she is looking towards us and he looks dead at me and goes "Oh are you talking shit now?" And I just said "I haven't said anything, but they're trying to bring my son into it since he's scared and crying" and then he starts in with the whole "I don't give a fuck!" and all this bullshit.

What none of us were aware of at the time is that the new waitress went in the back and called the cops. So now here they come and now my son is even more scared and is like screaming crying cause he thinks that we're gonna get in trouble now. But they trespassed them from the restaurant and they finally left, but I had to spend the next 30 minutes trying to calm him down. And I ended up telling them to cancel our order and we left and went to Chick Fil A instead.

Sorry so long, I obviously have told everyone I know at this point lol. but just wanted to type it out here as well.

Yeah, I guess we're lucky with the one we typically go to. He just turned 18 earlier in August, but he's a huge pussy.

i was growing up in a small village and never had any experience with any kind of violance for a long time xD
I can't recall more than 2 incidents, where i saw the police there. Never had a brawl in my life.
So put me in that waffle house with 14 years and i would have reacted the same way.

with 7 years old, i would have never gone to that place ever again.

Speaking of random violence/nonsense....

I took my wife and some of her friends to the Motley Crue concert on Saturday. SHOCKING number of young kids there with their parents (my daughter was not amongst them, she was at a good friends for the night)

Any who, as I'm waiting in line for the bathroom some idiot strolls out and starts aggressively 'drying' his hands by raising them over his head and throwing them down... soaking a bunch of the people in front of me in line. One of the other 'gentlemen' in line took offense to this display and decided to unload with a haymaker right to the guys jaw.

This starts a chain reaction where the guys buddy, who probably didn't see his friend being a jackass since he was leaving the bathroom, responding with a haymaker of his own, screaming "NO ONE TOUCHES HIM! NO ONE TOUCHES HIM!!!".. and then it's on.

Me, being the designated driver and shockingly sober, took 2-3 steps back and surveyed the situation. I see some parents with children retreating, others without children advancing... I realize that in all the confusion an alternate path around the mayhem presented itself that could get me right into the bathroom, so I took it.

Got to enjoy my piss to the sounds of a dozen idiots beating the crap out of each other until security arrived and broke it up. By that time I was done pissing and could head back to my seat.


The whole way back to my seat though I was thinking, "I'm really glad I didn't take the kid to this show...."

You know, 2 weeks ago I almost bought myself a lawn ticket the day of their show just because I wanted to see Nuno. Extreme was opening for them when they were here (probably everywhere). Figured I could just leave after a couple of Crue songs. But I couldn't get there early enough for the opener.

I did see Rush last night though and they were fucking awesome! I'm not a huge Rush fan but they are one of the best live bands ever. Their live sound production is so good with the drums front and center. And I knew that anyone they got to fill in for Neil Peart was going to be cream of the crop, but watching Annika kill it live on all those songs was pretty awesome.

I've now seen them twice... once in 1992 and again now in 2026 lol. So I guess 2058 will be the next show.
 
You know, 2 weeks ago I almost bought myself a lawn ticket the day of their show just because I wanted to see Nuno. Extreme was opening for them when they were here (probably everywhere). Figured I could just leave after a couple of Crue songs. But I couldn't get there early enough for the opener.

Extreme was really solid. They did a nice Ozzy tribute at the end of their set where they played a medley of "I Don't Know"/Bark at the Moon/Crazy Train" and it sounded great.

Tesla's lead singer sounded awful. At one point he was like, "we've been doing this for 40 years" and I was like, "yes, and smoking 2 packs every day along the way". My wife and her friends didn't appreciate my comment as much as I did.

Motley Crue actually sounded solid. Vince has had a lot of "look at how fat he got and how chopped his voice is!" videos uploaded over the last decade or so, so I was a bit concerned... he was fine though and the rest of the band (Nikki, Tommy and John 5) all sounded great and were moving around well. Nikki Sixx looks fantastic for his age, I guess he got sober... crazy that out of all of them he came out looking great. Tommy can still drum well, but he looks old and he's not doing the crazy shit where they are lifting him up in the air and he's playing upside down and stuff (John 5 handled most of the solo work on guitar).

And to be clear, I'm not trying to say that Vince sounded/looked/moved like he did in the 80s/90s... I'm saying that for a dude who has been at it for 40 years or so, and who looked and allegedly sounded like shit 8-10 years ago, he sounded and moved around fine.
