Tales of Everyday Life

Extreme was really solid. They did a nice Ozzy tribute at the end of their set where they played a medley of "I Don't Know"/Bark at the Moon/Crazy Train" and it sounded great.

Tesla's lead singer sounded awful. At one point he was like, "we've been doing this for 40 years" and I was like, "yes, and smoking 2 packs every day along the way". My wife and her friends didn't appreciate my comment as much as I did.

Motley Crue actually sounded solid. Vince has had a lot of "look at how fat he got and how chopped his voice is!" videos uploaded over the last decade or so, so I was a bit concerned... he was fine though and the rest of the band (Nikki, Tommy and John 5) all sounded great and were moving around well. Nikki Sixx looks fantastic for his age, I guess he got sober... crazy that out of all of them he came out looking great. Tommy can still drum well, but he looks old and he's not doing the crazy shit where they are lifting him up in the air and he's playing upside down and stuff (John 5 handled most of the solo work on guitar).

And to be clear, I'm not trying to say that Vince sounded/looked/moved like he did in the 80s/90s... I'm saying that for a dude who has been at it for 40 years or so, and who looked and allegedly sounded like shit 8-10 years ago, he sounded and moved around fine.

I've never caught Rush live, but I've heard nothing but good things.
I'm pretty sure the Crue plays with backing tracks behind them. They don't totally mime but they definitely have support... especially on Vince's vocals. However John 5 is fantastic and I would like to think he is playing all his own shit. But not a chance Nikki Sixx and Vince are 100% legit these days. But I guess the alternative is 'keeping it real' and sounding like Tesla lol. That guy was up in a crazy vocal range in his 20's and 30's.... I can only image what that sounds like now at 60. He wanted to be Steven Tyler so bad lol.

It would not surprise me at all if that were the case with Vince.

John 5 had a lengthy solo where he was clearly playing everything live/without backing support. There was a little too much shredding early on for my tastes, but along the way he started mixing some melody in and the dude can play the shit out of a guitar (looks like a weirdo though).

I'm not gonna do a, "he's top (insert number)" because I don't know enough about that to feel like I know what I'm talking about.. but he's very competent and that was a highlight during the night.

Yea, the guy from Tesla (Jeff Keith, I had to look it up) was all over the place. He would sound decent for a bar or two and then there would be a huge guttural drop-off, or he'd start a high note and lose it after a half a beat. It wasn't terrible, it was just inconsistent.

To be fair, dude is 67 years old and has been screaming high notes for 40 years now. They're also at the midpoint of the tour (started mid-July, goes till late September) so I'm sure there's some wear and tear going on at this point.

I'd say Tesla's set went the same way a lot of the straight to Netflix movies go... it ends and I'm like, "well, that is exactly what I expected.. not entirely sure why I hit play in the first place though"

LOL Tesla should put that quote on their website

And yeah, John 5 is top notch. He got famous for playing with Marilyn Manson (thus the weirdness) but he was already kind if weird. His solo stuff is mostly shred but a lot of other styles mixed in to. He is miles ahead of the other guys in the band in terms of talent. He was a big Crue and Mick Mars fan growing up so this is a dream job for him.

Here's some cool non-shred stuff...

He can clearly play the shit out of the guitar.

The first 45-50 seconds of his solo were all shred and I was kind of like, "eh... that's all we're doing? How long is this going to do on for?"... it went on for another 3-4 minutes but it did include a much wider range as it progressed.

It was impressive, even with me being sober lol.

I admittedly haven't seen a lot of the greats (no EVH, SRV, Clapton, Page, Jeff Beck, etc) live... but I've seen a few legends (Aerosmith, ACDC, Tom Petty) and a lot of highly regarded 'modern' guitarists (Queens of the Stone Age, RHCP, Smashing Pumpkins to name a few), and the only solo that I've seen better live than John 5's was Mark Tremonti. That's also 100% a matter of taste on my part. I'm sure plenty of people would have preferred John 5 to Tremonti. I just personally don't get blown away by the shred.

I also might have been a little jaded by the time the Crue came on, because Nuno Bettencourt and Frank Hannon are both solid in their own right and had been jamming away for close to 2 hours prior.

Tremonti is great. He can definitely lay it down. The solo in Blackbird frequently gets props as one of the best guitar solos ever. It's a good one for sure. I'm not a fan of all his bands but this is high quality song.

I gotta throw this one out to the Junkies and get some feedback on if I'm handling this appropriately.

So, my best friend (legit best friend, best man each others weddings... well, each of our first weddings at least) got married for a second time last year.

Him and his second wife had a really small ceremony in Hawaii that was just them and their immediate families (parents and siblings). There was never an 'official' Bachelor party for the second wedding, but... before they went to Hawaii there was a HUGE 'engagement' party with drinks and bands and the whole 9 yards. Also, my buddy explicitly told me he didn't need a 2nd Bachelor party because the first one was epic... and because his biological brother died between then and now and he would have wanted him to be part of it and it wouldn't feel right doing it without him in the mix.

All good with me, and while we speak all the time, we hadn't spoke of anything wedding/bachelor party related between then and yesterday.

Smash cut to yesterday....

I'm sitting on my couch watching a movie with the family and I get a text from one our mutual friends (who recently got divorced) who is apparently organizing an 'official' Bachelor party for my buddy. It's going to be in Nashville, it's in less than 3 months, it's right before the holidays and he wants to go all our and rent out some mansion and have it be a 4 night/5 day event.

I look at the text like, "What the fuck is going on?". I show it to my wife and she's like, "wait, is he getting married again?".

We're both VERY confused.

I reach out to the guy who sent the text and he's like, "they never had an official wedding" and I'm like beyond confused at this point. I go thru my texts and I see where he gave me the heads up he was 'officially' getting married. I even go on social media and I see his public post where he announces him and his wife got married.

I respond to the guy with the picture from social media and I'm like, "Dude, he's officially married... what are you talking about?"

Finally I get this response back, "Well yea, but he couldn't do anything last year because he only has so much vacation time. So, we're going to start a new trend and do a 'if it doesn't work out' Bachelor party now".

I think this is the most ridiculous thing ever. I understand it's not a week away (it's about 2 and a half months from now), but it's pretty short notice for something like this when you factor in the length (4 nights, 5 days) and the fact that it's going to involve travel (I'd have to fly in or rent a car for the week).

If my buddy was legitimately getting married I'd be all in (and I'd be the one setting everything up, like I did for his first wedding)... he got married 10 months ago! Who has a destination Bachelor party 10 months after getting married?

I feel like this is 100% designed for the guy who sent the text because he went thru a messy divorce and he's trying to pretend like it's not for him and it's for our buddy.

I'm ready to go off on him and tell him he's a complete asshole for trying to design this as something for our buddy when it's really to lighten his own financial load on a near week long trip to Nashville.. but maybe I'm overreacting and the proper response is just to say that I've got something else going on that weekend (I don't, but I can make something up) and politely decline the invite?

I should add that while I like most of the people on that text thread (and many of them have already said they are in)... I can't stand the dude who is organizing all of this. He's in his early 50s and acts like he's still in high school (which is why his now ex-wife left him).

I guess I would be less irked by this if the text was, "hey, let's all go to Nashville and get fucked up a long weekend!" rather than, "hey, this is for our buddy, it's his official Bachelor party and if you miss it you'd really be letting him down"

For what it's worth, my wife thinks I'm overreacting and while she agrees it's ridiculous to hype it as a bachelor party... she has been saying all of us (well, 80% of the people on the text thread) should get together and catch up, so she isn't opposed to it. I disagree with her though, I think it's completely retarded and if the shoe was on the other foot and one of her retard friends sent out a text like that, I would think it was the dumbest thing ever.

I think you are vastly overthinking this. Just go to the party and have fun.

I didn't have many different jobs, but the one i have right now.. we are a small team, holidays are planned half a year in advance, you could not just take a week off in 3 months.. especially in the end of the year.
Prior i was working in the super market and end of the year was basically a fucking war zone. No one got days of there.

I hate weddings so much. Perfomative shit, with way too many people and for way too much money.
I would bounce on every wedding i could. (i was on the one of my best friend though.. but damn.. it did not change my stance on weddings xD)

Talk to your friend before answering this bloke.
Maybe your friend was the driving force and you are shitting on the wrong person :P

Talk to your friend before answering this bloke.

We will definitely talk between now and the OSU/Texas game... I'll clarify things with him then.

The idea of having a bachelor party for someone 11 months AFTER they got married is so messed up to me.

do a "totally not a bachelor party" party a week before with everyone but the idiot.

It's gonna be a minimum of $2,000 after airfare, the Vrbo mansion rental, all the barhopping/events are factored in.

If my buddy was getting married I'd 100% be in and be heavily involved in the planning. (like we did for his first wedding)

I dunno, I gotta look over the finances... Crook County just bent me over and raped me for $2100 in unexpected propety taxes and my daughters Christmas already took a hit from that. I wouldn't feel good about stiffing my family so I could get blackout drunk for a week at a fake bachelor party.

I think you are totally correct... this is divorced guy having a mid-life crisis party and dragging his buddies along for the ride, using the retro-bachelor party as the excuse. lol. He really just wants his own bachelor party. But I wouldn't stress about it... it's obviously not your buddies bachelor party so I'd treat it more like any other party weekend some random friend is planning. I wouldn't feel bad telling them no way if you don't want to go. I doubt the guy who got married would care. It's totally just an excuse to create the trip in the first place because a divorce party sounds lame I guess.

People do weird shit when they are mid-life crisising.

Does the good friend knows or it's a surprise for him?

I'll assume he does since it's not like waiting for him when he returns home and screaming surprise

so why don't you just tell him how it is and that you're sorry but it doesn't work out for you and you'd have done something less committing and also what you think about the other "friend" lol

He knew to clear his schedule in November to go to Nashville, but it's unclear if he knows it's being billed as his 'official' bachelor party.

I'm going to call him Thursday (we generally talk Thursdays before Ohio State football games) and talk it thru with him then.

He knows how I feel about the other friend. Dude is such a disaster. The last time we hung out he ended up flooding his house (not my place, thank God) because he allegedly got up in the middle of the night to take a piss and somehow ended up putting the stopper on the sink and leaving the water running all night as everyone else slept. I call him "The Whale" lol

The more I think about it, I'm thinking that the dude organizing it is going to attempt to screw the rest of us (minus my buddy) on the Vrbo or something along those lines so that it's cheaper/free for him.

I don't like him at all and I wouldn't put it past him to pull something like that.

To clarify...

It's because he turned his house into the ocean. (and whales live in the ocean)

It sounds like a good time, but I think y'all should go bungie jumping in Sao Paulo instead.

I should propose that we go surfing in Australia instead.

Point Break bachelor party!
