There are gypies all over the balkans and central europe. Alot in Slovakia and Serbia. They descend from Indian merchant caravans IIRC. I've seen gypsy and pikey used interchangably for the Irish travellers.

Pikey is generally a british term, we used to call em tinkers or piebalds
