lol look at the guys who have gone on extended title reigns.
think about the last time you saw them in real trouble?
anderson silva: barely anyone touched his chin until sonnen did it. still won the fight. finally was knocked out by weidman, but you can't deny he was great at not getting hit.
gsp: no explanation needed.
jon jones: before gustaffson, had ANYONE hit him hard more than once in a fight?
jose aldo: i straight up can't remember him ever absorbing a power shot.
fedor's the only longtime champ i can think of that didn't play GREAT defence. and i guess chuck liddell. but it was effectively a different sport back then. and they both began to pay for their style AS SOON as they lost a step to age.

I'm not disagreeing with you, grapple. that's pretty obvious the goal in any fight to deal the most punishment and recieve the least punishment, unless you're a masochist. but a super premiere chin does help. look at cain or nick diaz who just walk into people punches.

sure. what i'm saying is if you don't play good defence, the nature of the sport with its ability to knock you out at any time will prevent you from going on a long title run. eventually, they all get caught.

There's a decent amount of agreement in this thread.

i'd probably rate cain's chin higher than nelson's. other than jds's shot to the temple, i've never seen someone back cain down with haymakers. nelson has been forced back and to take cover a lot by big time hitters.

You sir, are nuts. I can't stand Nelson.....but he has the best chin in MMA without a doubt. Cain has been dropped and KO'd by guys that couldn't finish Nelson (Congo, JDS).

that's your opinion. like i said from what i seen, cain walk into people punches and nelson has been forced to take cover everytime he fights a better striker. cain has never really had to endure that level of punishment, so we can never really see the extent of his durability.

Nelson was also knocked out by Arlovski back in the days of Elite XC... Dan Henderson has best chin in the history of MMA... Dude took a flush Vitor kick to the face and was conscious when the ref stopped the fight... That was after getting uppercutted off of his feet and taking other big shots from the guy who may seriously hit harder than any fighter in MMA, at least harder than any who isn't a HW and probably harder than most HWs at least...

I agree, his chin was very solid last night. Johny did say in the post fight press conference that he was only really throwing at about 70% last night to conserve energy. He wasn't chasing the KO like he did with Fitch and Kampmann. I'd rather people wonder if my chin is good or not because of my striking defense than take enough punches to find out, though.

Yeah, there were a couple of times where Johny whiffed on a left hook that would have ended the fight if it connected. I was pretty impressed with GSP's chin and Johny's cardio.

This is true but he wasn't going to get it and time was just ticking away. Def some stalling there. Granted he shoudlve gotten warnings. Don't bring up shields hendo. One of the worst cards I've seen live

what I was really impressed with was Johny's strength and speed. I figured he'd have the cardio (dudes been competing at the highest level possible for nearly 2 decades if you include wrestling, and he's got dolce) but i thought GSP would have a clear advantage in size, man-strength and a huge one in speed.
he had none of those things. I clearly underestimated The Baconator, even though he's one of my all time favourites.

Jh has always been surpringly fast. His strength is off the charts always as well. I remember watching wrasslin clips of him when he was first signed to ufc and was like damn. His power is the scariest thing though and that's what made gsp look human again. Gsp said from the start that he was nervous and i don't blame him. Jh has that very rare power.

I was really impressed when he'd just lift and turn GSP. Didn't seem like GSP was trying at all, nor did it look like johny was putting much effort into it.

I really thought the reach was going to be more of an advantage for GSP. JH did a good job of closing the distance. You can tell JH is just one of those tough ol farm boys that has crazy strength.
