The long-awaited UFC debut of Phil “CM Punk” Brooks is going to have to wait a little longer.
The former WWE star and MMA newcomer today told MMAFighting.com he’s slated for back surgery today to correct a herniated disc. A timetable wasn’t given for his recovery.
“My back has always bugged me,” Punk told MMAFighting.com. “Figured it was just wrestling (expletive). Turns out it was.
“It got bad enough to the point where I couldn’t do anything the week before I went to train with the New Jersey Devils last month. One day I could manage. The next day I couldn’t. I’ve been in agony for almost a month. Chiropractor, acupuncture, massage, cryotherapy – nothing worked.”
The news comes at an unfortunate time. Although signed to the UFC in 2014, Punk’s debut date had never been officially set. However, it appeared to be a mere formality after this past weekend’s UFC Fight Night 82 event.
Welterweight Mickey Gall (2-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) won his UFC debut by 45-second submission to set up the fight with Punk. They had an in-cage face-off, and oddsmakers had already set the line (with Gall a substantial -300 favorite) for the bout.
That fight was then expected to take place in the coming months at UFC 199 or UFC 200, but Punk’s surgery is likely to push it back even further.

I'm beginning to wonder if we will ever actually see Punk in the Octagon. One of the concerns when he signed was all the lingering injuries from his wrestling days and how they'd affect him at his age. Starting to think he'll call it quits due to injuries before he ever gets a chance to fight

If CM Punk is having back surgery
before
his first ever MMA fight he shouldn't be fighting professionally and he shouldn't get sanctioned.
As anyone here who trains or has ever trained, if you want to test yourself you can do so at your gym with your training partners. If you train, you are a fighter. Punk should just be happy with that.

Next time they may want to wait on this until he is actually ready to step into the cage. Really, if he did all this behind the scenes for 2 years, then 'signed' with the UFC now when he was ready to fight (in theory) this wouldn't be such a public embarrassment. No one would have even known if he never made it to the cage. Instead the UFC went out of their way and f---ed real fighters for a guy who can't even get into the cage.

Right, but if the UFC announce they've signed him just before he fights they lose out on a s--- ton of publicity. Publicity & money are the reason they signed Punk, they've had 1 already. It's not costing them anything to have him under contract without fighting, so either way they'll be happy enough.
