BJ "The Prodigy" Penn. It has to be. In all his losses except maybe the second Edgar fight he won the First Round.
Nick Diaz fight, he won the first round, lost miserably.
Fitch fight dominated the first round but faded later in the fight.
Came out strong in the first Edgar fight, then slowed down.
Picked GSP apart both times he lost, but won in the first round.
Took round 1 from Machida and he weighed in at 225 lbs!
6 first round finishes
26 fights and only lost the first round 1-2 times.
Just a thought that I had, and if BJ had the will of Nick and the Physical gifts of GSP, he would be a monster.
Any other strange statistics that relate hand in hand with that fighters greatness?

Joe Lauzon. 21 wins (and 21 finishes), 15 in the first round. Of his six losses, only one came in the first round.

Good point other than the fact that he lost the first round to GSP in the second fight. I was immediately thinking of Joe Lauzon when I read the title to this thread, especially the G-Sot fight.

MacWombat has it right. Penn didn't win the first round in the 2nd GSP fight.

Out of about 120 fights. Not that good, when you look at it overall. Barely over 50%

Not that good? In 115 professional mixed martial arts fights, one fighter has his fights not leave the first round a total of 69 times. That's 60% on the money. I wondering how many fighters have a first round rate like that. Carwin comes to mind (83%), JDS (80%), Cain (70%). Hell, Anderson's is 54%. Belfort, another 60 percenter in the first. And yet Psycho is excited at Penn's 23% first round finish rate plus how he fared in 4 other fights which he lost.
See the point? Just because Penn does his best work in the first round doesn't make him the greatest first round fighter - there are many fighters who've done better in the first round for longer against just as good if not better competition.

I always thought Sokoudjou was the best first round fighter of all time, he beats most guys he fights in round one, then goes on to gas really hard.
