Political Correctness

To restrict Americans to limits on gas by government decree and to restrict what stores we are allowed to shop at would require a far more authoritarian government. I don't believe that will happen without some kind of seismic change in our system.
And a seismic cultural shift.

Were all of you people in a coma during COVID?

Or do you all just live so far out in the boonies to where you didn't have to put up with any of the nonsense that I, and hundreds of millions of others, did?

What about when there are restrictions on how many gas you can use, or what grocery stores you can shop at?

You're already starting to see it in other coutries. Do you really think it will never happen here?
1) "whataboutism"
2) Yes, I really think it will never happen here.

I lived in a part of NYC that treated the Covid cards about as seriously (unless the restaurant owner was overly paranoid about getting fined) as a smoking ban in a Jamaican bar.

Cool, I hope you're right.

I just have a hard time believing that all of these massive data centers are being built for altruistic reasons.

I'm probably wrong though, wouldn't be the first time I was wrong about something.

And again, I get it... I'm not in blind agreement with the crowd so the thought is, "get a load of this guy, what a tinfoil hat wearing idiot".

Look, I don't think it's going to be some flip of the switch grand reveal into a dystopian hellhole that the sinister and mysterious powers that be have had planned since the dawn of time.

I do think we're going (to continue) to see a gradual erosion of liberties and freedoms that are going to be sold as progress and of a 'for the common good' nature.. out of that, I 100% see these data centers and surveillance tools being used to enforce restrictions on things that we previously took for granted (travel in particular)

Again though, I do hope I'm wrong. I just really can't see it going any other way....

Who is claiming the demonic "data centers" are being built for altruistic reasons? They are clearly and openly being built for capitalistic reasons. They are filling a market need. A need that most uninformed critics use on a daily (if not hourly, or secondly) basis.

What is the point of capital in a world where human labor isn't needed at scale?

Who's going to be controlling the mining robots when we reach the asteroid belt? ChatGPT?

Human beings have been inventing and figuring stuff out since caveman times. Human labor will ALWAYS be needed at scale.

Sure. I agree that it's a non-issue when resources are in abundance and humans are at the helm/in charge of enforcement.

Do you have any idea of how quickly AI is advancing? Look at 6 years ago compared to 3 years ago , and 3 years ago compared to today.

Again, that assessment is all being baked into the system of laws and law enforcement capabilities that exist right now. Right now there's no restrictions on gas or food or speech. In the future that could change, if it does, the fact that everything you say do and every movement you've made in the last decade plus is stored in a data center will matter.

Whatever though, I'm no longer scared of it. I just shrug my shoulders at the dismissive attitude so many have of what is happening in real time right in front of them.
Where the hell have you been Buckey, bout goddam time we see some multi-replies

I've been around. You know me... I get around.

Agree to disagree with superintelligence being no different than the car or internet or other inventions.

The only thing I would like to say before I drop this topic is ... I don't fear or freak out about any of this, I simply acknowledge that it's happening.

I'm not doom and gloom, I have been enjoying the shit out of my life. I've dropped 40 pounds since March, I've been taking the wife and daughter to theme parks, concerts and other fun venues left and right, I've cut back on drinking and I'm in a great place spiritually.

Alongside that though, I aee what is on the horizon and have come to the conclusion that there is a WAY higher likelihood that things are going to go poorly than swimmingly.

It's fine though, I'm going to shut up now and let everyone get back to agreeing with each other.

Okay, I am going to put words in mouths and assume one of the two scenarios are what you are kveching over.

1) AI becoming self aware and going Skynet on us (not gonna happen, AI is incapable of consciousness, it can only pretend to do so. I am more worried about some idiot fucking up logic parameters to where AI thinks setting buildings on fire or shooting holes into strangers will solve some programmed primary objective, but that is no different than an engineer building a bridge that collapses due to bad math).

2) There is a plan by 'The Illuminati/Annunaki/Reptilians' to reduce population levels to some specific level to reduce useless eaters. (Let me ask you this, what is more likely, an bunch of old billionaire Tedtalk hacks who have their butlers brush their own teeth actually getting together to influence said 'nWo', or hostile governments with their own demographic and fertility issues, like Russia and China, using troll bot farms to prop up anti-procreation quakery like men cutting their dicks off or a battle of the sexes on the internet or the latest anti-natalist poison that is targeting teenagers? Targeting Western governments they consider rivals)

Neither of those are where I see all of this going in the near future.

Then what? Mass unemployment and starvation due to job destruction?

I do forsee mass unemployment.

Not in the next 3-6 months, but in the next 2-5 years.

I don't think there will be "starvation". I do think there will be a response to the unrest that will involve restrictions on personal liberty/freedom.

There were riots when the factory machinery was introduced. Not only did we survive that, it actually increased employment and led to population booms. We are a smart, resiliant species, we will adjust.

Absolutely no one that is involved with AI or AI governance is of the opinion that it will lead to increased employment in the long run.

(Population boom or humans/governments coming together and figuring it out is certainly plausible)

The reason the factory machines analogy is flawed is because factory machines were producing things that humans still needed to deliver to one another, and the things the machines were producing were being produced (much faster) with raw materials humans collected

AI is more like cars replacing horses as a form of travel. Do some people still use horses? Sure, but it's a novelty or for specialized situations.
