Round 9 ( Championship Finale)

Category 1- Music your great/grandparents listened to

Is good/bad music timeless? We'll test that theory with this category. A. Pick a song from the 1930s that you think will impress the judges the most. B. Pick a song from the 1930s that you think will impress the judges the least. No write-ups. Each worth 5 points.

1. @Tito Orcheese
A. Roy Acuff - Wabash Cannon Ball
cmvideo75:
This is ok. Not a terrible song but I don't know what is supposed to be 'impressive' about this. Kind of just a folk song from the era. 3/5
Webble:
I kinda liked this it made me want to sing along, it felt very old school record 4/5
Brick:
Ah, again taking me back to early 90s music appreciation class, which actually focused on this genre. Definitely not my style and it’s super twangy, but for a 1930s movie it’s far better that some big-band dreck or something like that. It was super repetitive and not particularly creative overall, though. I might have dug up Minnie the Moocher or maybe something like Bing Crosby that probably held up better. 3/5.
GoodCat:
I guess this is pretty good. It's kinda hard without context or a write up to see what reason you think this would or wouldn't impress the judges. Not a bad song, especially for something recorded in the 1930s. What was kinda weird though was the wailing in the background, was that supposed to be train noises or something? 3/5
Total: 13/20

B. Lucille Bogan - Shave 'Em Dry
cmvideo75:
I'm not quite sure how to score this one. The song itself is not 'impressive' but a black woman in the 1930s singing vulgar songs about cumming and nipples? Very impressive lol. I would have actually score this higher if it was entered as the 'impressive' clip. I'm impressed by the content, but the song is bad. So I'll go midway here. 2.5/5
Webble: ok so this was truly awful in so many ways, the words, the quality everything 4/5
Brick:
Pretty amazing they pulled this off in the ‘30s, lol. I suppose this qualifies as a ‘30s song, even though it was written and recorded by three different artists in the 1920s. But it looks like this super-raunchy version was quite different lyrically, and not just a re-recording, so I guess we’ll go with it. That’s not your main problem anyway; this was supposed to “impress me the least.” I kind of dug it; frankly I may have scored it higher than Wabash in the “impress the most” category. Pretty catchy tune, daring lyrics, and the singer is clearly having a blast laying down the track. Just think this was a big miss for the spirit of the category. 1.5/5
GoodCat:
Alright, so I'm thinking and hoping maybe you got your picks swapped somehow, because this song is actually crazy and hilarious and absolutely shocking for the time frame. I have heard of this artist before but never actually heard one of her songs. Sorry, but I'm gonna have to ding this one for actually impressing me instead of not. 1.5/5
Total: 9.5/20

2. @Eranys
A. Benny Goodman And his Orchestra-Sing, Sing, Sing

(Shorter version if the 8 minute one is too long for you):
cmvideo75: Good entry here. Only thing holding it back from a higher score is how familiar it is. Tough to be super impressive when you've heard it so many times. But as a composition this is great. The drums are fantastic and drive the piece. 4/5
Webble:
ooo yeah baby this got my jiggling love the instruments, could have done with some words 4/5
Brick:
Pretty well done. A fun arrangement with enough variation to keep it interesting despite its extended length. I could have sworn that this song was done by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy during that long, dark, horrible swing-craze we all had to suffer through in the 90s, but apparently not. Maybe that just shows how limited the genre is and adds an extra level of creativity to the creators of this song. 4/5.
GoodCat:
This is more like it. One of the more famous jazz/swing whatever you wanna call the genre songs of all time. It still holds up today in that genre as well. Not really much more to say about it. 4/5
Total: 16/20

B. Kay Kyser and his Orchestra ‎– Three Little Fishies (Itty Bitty Poo) 1939
cmvideo75:
Ha... yeah this is bad. Not impressed but I feel like this wasn't intended for me as the target audience. 3.5/5
Webble: I don’t know why I am like this but I don’t hate this, I think I heard it as a child and whilst it isn’t great but don’t hate it so 2/5 sorry
Brick: OK, well done. That thoroughly sucked. Not impressed in the slightest bit whatsoever. I was already annoyed 30 seconds in, and it just keeps redoubling down getting worse and worse with nonsense words and annoying voices. Then when I thought we were about at peak suck, they add whistles and mouth-fart noises. The kiddie voice had me looking around my desk for a screwdriver or pen or something I should shove into my brain. 5/5.
GoodCat:
It's not a terrible song, but it is definitely cheesy as all get out. And is this actually the first instance of hip hop? He did the first verse and then had all his features do the other verses lol. Also gotta give props for the Windows 95 visualizer as well. Pretty good pick though. 3.5/5
Total: 14/20

No feeling out process, Eranys once again explodes out of the gates and takes a huge lead on a heavy favorite. After the opening round, Eranys leads Tito 30-22.5.

At least one person agreed with me, lol. That Bogan song made me wanna throw up...fkn terrible. Ery definitely had the better picks, though. I almost went instrumental for my good pick, but thought it would get dinged for not having vocals. 🤷

Fuck 1930s music.
