I'm listening to Junkie radio right now and Jeremy Botter is co-hosting. For those that don't know, Jeremy is a respected MMA journalist who is widely considered a deep insider in the MMA industry.
When discussing the topic of Gina Carano coming back and getting an immediate title shot, he said a few interesting things.
-The "hardcores" are responsible for 160-210,000 PPV buys for every UFC PPV.
-There's a 70% chance Ronda vs Gina will happen in December.
-If it does happen he thinks it will do 1M buys.
-That fight is ridiculous to people who know the UFC, but works for those who don't follow as seriously.
That was all interesting but the biggest thing he said was, and this is as close to verbatim as I can recall, "Let's be honest, the UFC is NOT a sport, it's an entertainment organization. Every decision Zuffa makes is based on entertainment and finances first, they just revolve around the concept of being a sport."
That's a very heavy statement, how do you feel about it?

I don't agree. Yes, money plays a big role, but does anyone really think each match-up is dictated by money? Rubbish. Say what you will about Dana, but he loves MMA and you can hear it in his voice, especially when he and Joe are talking.
The UFC, like EVERY sports franchise, looks at finances and the appeal to fans. Look at the rule changes in various sports over the years, 90% are designed to make the games more fan friendly.
Botter has been covering the sport for 4 or 5 years, but never for a major site and I don't think he is a guy that has major connections, so I don't really take his business perspective too seriously.

The UFC is not a sport. Just like the NHL is not a sport, NFL is not a sport, NBA is not a sport. Those are all companies. It's kind of a silly question. MMA is a sport, Hockey is a sport, Football is a sport, Basketball is a sport.

Well yeah, UFC is a business.
MMA is a sport.
Anyone who doesn't understand that probably struggles to spell their own name.

No s---. This is what people have been saying to you for some time now.
People keep trying to place sporting rules on an entertainment product.
But all mma is packaged the same way and has been since the first ufc that was created to promote gracie jiu-jitsu.
There has never been mma without that angle. And never will be.
Mma really reminds me of that great place to live that everyone starts moving to. They get involved and want to change aspects of that place to fit there old home life. The problem is those very changes, change that once great place to live to just another place. Leave the town alone and let the people in it enjoy it. If there are aspects of your town you like, stay there.

There is no difference between what the UFC does and anyone other org like the NBA or NFL. They all make decisions based on financial gain.

I would say one difference is rankings.... In the other sports they matter.
Besides that it is pretty much the same

You cannot use the terms "UFC" and "MMA" interchangeably in this discussion. One is a profit-based organization while the other is a sport.

Team sports also are a lot more active and their schedules are always laid out ahead of time for the season. MMA rankings are determined 1 fight at a time

That's the joke of the UFC creating their own rankings. They throw them in the garbage whenever they don't work for their business plan.

What I meant is kind of like what BUDO just said. They do not always give the #1 contender the next shot. Yeah sometimes it is because of injury or something but a lot of the time it is not the guy only out ranked by the champ.

Every pro sports league that generates revenue is an entertainment organization. Every decision the NFL makes is based on getting more fans, better TV numbers, more advertising revenue, more TV revenue.
